Ms. Bethany's 2nd Gr. Family Group
Code: 2bethany25
Math: Students compose two-dimensional shapes to create a composite shape.
Students decompose two-dimensional shapes into same-sized units to determine their value.
Students find the value of geoboard polygons when the smallest square is assigned a value of 1.
Students partition rectangles into rows and columns of same-sized squares to find their value.
Reading: We are currently reading The War of 1812 and focusing on key ideas and details in the text by asking and answering who, what, when, where and why and how questions. Students identify key details, analyze character actions, and understand characters' feelings during challenges.
We are doing Mystery Book Club, which is led by the teacher reading the mentor text and modeling strategies to find evidence in the text, use context clues to determine the meaning of words while investigating the text. Students then break into their small groups to practice those same strategies in the books their group is assigned. Reading mysteries is an engaging way to build accuracy, rate, and expression, often needing to read text multiple times to find clues.
Science: We are learning about the life cycle and structure of plants, the process of photosynthesis, pollinations and how to plant and care for plants. We have planted seeds and are caring for our plants in our classroom greenhouse. Our "Hairy Harry" project is off to a great start. Students record the length of the grass (aka Harry's hair), and record scientific observations in a weekly journal.
Writing: We will be writing about facts that we learn through our reading unit, science and social studies lessons and continue to practice persuasive writing.
Social Studies: We are wrapping up our History of Anchorage Unit, as well as our Changemakers unit. In the final weeks of school, we will be focusing a lot on a growth mindset, and embracing the challenges ahead as THIRD GRADERS! :)
Friday Letters
Dear families,
Each Friday, your child will write a letter to you or someone else in their household, that talks about the events that happened during the week. Each week, I would like whoever they wrote to, to respond to their letter and return it to school the following Monday. I will keep these letters in a file and at the end of the year, I will bind them into a second-grade keepsake of all the things they learned and did over the course of the year. Please do your best to respond to and return the letters. This is also a great way to see the progress your little writer makes from the beginning of the year until the end of second grade. The first few letters that come home are guided so I can show them the format that I would like them to write their letters in. These letters will have sentence starters that your child finishes with their own words (i.e. This week of school was ________)
After the first few letters, I will taper back my guidance and mostly talk them through the letters so that they are as authentic as possible. This is where the magic begins. I am very excited to see your child grow as a writer this year and I can’t wait for you to hear about all the exciting learning we do during our school day.
Any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out and ask.
Best,
Ms. Bethany
