FEBRUARY TEAM UPDATES - SCROLL DOWN TO FIND YOUR TEAM
In Ms. Spencer’s Social Studies 3rd quarter classes, we recently completed our unit of study of the Revolution & New Nation! We end the quarter with the Civics Unit, the early establishment of U.S. government and civics. After spring break, 4th quarter begins with the Colonization and Settlement Unit and the unique regional dynamics and development of the 13 English colonies.
Mr. Bushey’s Math 8 classes are continuing their adventure into mathematics. We are finishing off our course with learning about Area and Volume of various shapes. At this point, our quarter 3 classes should have the basis to continue on in their Freshman year of high school. After spring break, I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in person and hope you are all ready with masks and understand that quarter 4 will be unlike any school year before.
Mrs. Black’s 4th quarter ELA 8 classes will begin our study of dystopia vs. utopia. As part of this unit, students will evaluate the elements of the dystopian fiction genre and write an informational essay. Students will continue to submit work via Canvas throughout the quarter.
In Ms. Weingartner’s Science classes, we are learning all about what makes Alaska rock ‘n’ roll...earthquakes and volcanoes! Extra credit is available for Volcanoes Trivia and you can still take a picture on the Anchorage Light Speed Planet Walk. If you are interested in applying for the Service High School BioMedical Career Academy we saw in the presentation, you can go here for more information. Applications are due March 18th.
In Mrs. Sedor’s Social Skills and Study Skills classes continue to focus on how to be a successful student. We talk about how we observe, listen, and interact in class, and practice those skills.
Language Arts with Ms. Franklin:
It’s 4th quarter already, time sure does fly. We will start this quarter working on Unit 2 of the Springboard curriculum. This unit focuses on understanding how our lives are affected by media and advertising. We will analyze articles related to media and advertising and examine their credibility. Students will take the resources presented and analyzed in class, along with a resource of their own finding to construct an informational argumentative writing piece supporting their thoughts on the effects advertising has on our youth.
Math with Mr. Vandroff:
It is hard to believe that we have arrived in the 4th Quarter. I am so very excited to welcome you into my classroom. I am so ready to meet each of you, face-to-face (with a mask). This quarter we will be working on Circles and reviewing materials that may have given students trouble during the year. As we know, this is an unprecedented time but Hanshew students are resilient and eager to learn. I truly look forward to interacting with each of you.
Science with Ms. Tifental:
Welcome to the 4th quarter! It is wonderful to have you all back and face-to-face. In person classes are going to be different than they were before the pandemic. In the classroom, students will be expected to stay as far apart as possible. Protective face masks must be worn properly and at all times in the classroom. All lab activities will be performed individually, not in groups. This quarter we will be learning physics and computer programming.
Social Studies with Mr. Petersen:
Fourth Quarter is almost here! I am looking forward to getting back in the classroom. This quarter we will study Europe, Asia, and Africa. Students will learn about the history, physical geography and human geography of these continents. We will also continue to learn about what culture is and how it affects our lives. Students will explore the birth of civilization as they learn about Mesopotamia.

Science with Ms. O'Connor
Third and fourth quarter science is filled with physics. We explore many topics relating to motion and energy.
For kids who will be back in the building for quarter 4, the following items will be helpful: sharpened pencils, colored pencils, a small pencil sharpener with lid, notebook paper, a filled water bottle with your name on it, and a ready to eat snack.
Math with Mr. Priest
This is our last week online! We are wrapping up our unit on Perimeters and Area! We are looking forward to having students in person!
For Math 7 we are going to start 4th quarter off with Rates and Ratios. Pre-Algebra will start off with a unit on Exponents!
Have a great spring break everyone!
Language Arts with Mrs. Lake
Hi! We have one week left in the quarter, and then it's Spring Break! (I hope everyone has a nice, relaxing time.)
When we come back, most of us will be in school. For Language Arts, we will be working mainly out of our SpringBoard curriculum. However, we will also be practicing grammar, analyzing poetry, and reading short stories. Please know, every day students are required to bring the following items:
a binder with a section specifically for LA
loose-leaf paper (&/or a notebook that has perforations for tearing out pages neatly)
pens/pencils
colored pencils (highlighters are fine to bring in addition to colored pencils, but we are going to be marking our SpringBoard text, and the pages are thin. You will need colored pencils for those, as highlighters will probably bleed through)
a pencil sharpener (with a cap/lid)
your SpringBoard textbook (If you have one already, bring it. If you haven't gotten one, please know I have ordered you one, and will pass those out the first week of 4th Q.)
a charged computer device and a charger
your Planner (this will be provided by ASD, or we will create one.)
a leisure book for SSR (Silent Sustained Reading)
Optional: A filled water bottle with a cap and your name written on it. (Please know water fountains will be unavailable).
I look forward to seeing and working with you all in person! - Mrs. Lake
Social Studies with Mr. Petrash
Mister Petrash here! 4th Quarter will bring my “old” 2nd Quarter students back to Social Studies. We will do a quick tour of the world’s Continents for our Social Studies Curriculum. Lots of fun ideas, maps, videos, and CNN-10s! I look forward to resuming our class together!
Please read the MATERIALS LIST for Mrs. Lake above. I am requesting the same (except Springboard), ESPECIALLY your computer device, charger, and colored pencils! See you soon!
3rd quarter is just finishing up and Spring Break will be here before we know it. As we are moving forward to 4th quarter in person learning, we understand that there will be a bit of a new learning curve to what school will look like for the remainder of the year. Every student needs to have access to a computer (of some sort) to bring to class with them every day. We will be continuing to teach via Canvas, so it is imperative that students bring charged devices with them to school each day. If your student is in need of a loaner Chromebook for 4th quarter, please let the front office know ASAP! There are only so many devices available and it is on a first come first serve basis.
We would really like to continue to encourage the use of the parent app for Canvas this year. This is a way for you to stay up to date with assignments and due dates, as well as help you and your student stay on the same page with regard to school. If you run into problems doing this, let one of us know, and we can set up a zoom meeting to help. This is no way required, we just thought that we would pass along the information on how to stay caught up with student work through Canvas.
Science with Mr. Mittlestadt- 4th quarter is almost upon us! Science is gonna study the night time sky in Alaska in our 8th grade Astronomy class, including planets, moons, the Sun and other stars. After that by April we will be learning about Alaska’s Earthquakes and Volcanoes in our study of Geology. We will look into the 1964 Earthquake and learn why and how we should be prepared for the next “big one.”
Language Arts with Ms. Davis- 4th quarter class information: We will be starting our unit on The Challenges of Utopia. We will read the book The Giver and discuss the differences between utopia and dystopia. We will be taking the MAP growth test, as well as IReady test, for spring data information.
Math with Ms. Moonan- We are finishing our last Math Unit Volume. Please take the time to make up missing work and have it turned into Canvas by Wednesday ,March 3rd for your Math class. I will continue to conference with students in class but support from families always makes a difference. The next time they have a math class will be in high school Congratulations!
Social Studies with Mr. Clark- Starting out 4th quarter, we will be starting with the American Revolution, From there, we will be continuing our study of the U.S. Government and the Constitution. Students are learning about the branches of government and their respective powers and responsibilities. I look forward to meeting some of your students in person next quarter and in general getting them ready for high school next year. Thank you for the opportunity to work with your student.
Please email us if you have any questions or concerns throughout the year.

In ELL Math, we are currently working on Combining Like Terms and Multi-steps Equations. In 4th Quarter, ELA will transition to Social Studies, and Math will be Science.
Mrs. Hughes and Ms. Heather are excited to welcome everyone back to school. It will be so nice to see everyone in person. As we start off our second semester, we will be focusing on recognizing and controlling our defense mechanisms, how others can influence us either positively or negatively, and how to deal with setbacks in a positive way by jumping back up and continuing to try. We will work on prosocial skills such as using self-control, properly expressing our feelings, dealing with fear, and persevering when things get difficult.

Hanshew Middle School’s Fine Arts Department is here to guide students in developing their skills and interests in Art and Music. Our fine arts classes help provide students with non-academic benefits such as emotional expression, positive self-esteem, working through challenges, and problem solving as they work to master their craft.
Hanshew's Fine Arts Department works to give each student a well-rounded education. Fine Arts gives students a creative outlet. Fine Arts classes also work to teach self-discipline and problem solving, which benefits students in their core classes and life.

Hello from Ms. Witter!
I am still subbing at Hanshew. Lately I've been monitoring students in the library or Room 103 for their virtual classes. I've also been a sub in Mr. Willis's, and Ms. Lake's classes. I enjoy getting to know more of our awesome Hanshew Hawks. I was especially pleased to see so many of the students I have met get awards last Friday for attendance, improvement in their grades, and having an awesome attitude during this in-person reentry.
