Good things are happening at Bartlett!! Our new year is off to a great start with incredible events such as our Multicultural Night and our Freshman Fair. If you were not able to attend our Multicultural Night, (or want to enjoy it again) we are including some photos and videos to show off our talented students and the rich diversity we love about our Bartlett Family. We are so proud of the hard work our students and teachers put in to make this night such a success.
On February 26, we will have our annual Freshman Fair called "Bear Tracks: Your Journey Starts Here". This is a great opportunity for incoming freshman to meet teachers, coaches and other students and see all the amazing things they can look forward to next year. If you know a current 8th grade student, please encourage them to save the date and join us.
I also want to celebrate the Girls Basketball Team winning the Alaska Airlines Classic on January 23. This team is extraordinary and would love to have your support at their games.
Thank you, as always, for all that you do to support your Bartlett Bear(s)
As always, Go Bears!!

Please call the Attendance Line, 907-742-1832, to report your student's absence or request a Blue Pass (an early release pass). If we are unable to answer, it is critical that you leave a message. The Attendance Line voicemail is continually monitored and processed in the order in which they are received.
If you are a requesting a Blue Pass (needing a student to leave early), please give us 45 minutes to process that request. This gives us time to check the voicemail, locate what class the student is in, send the pass to the student, and gives the student time to collect their things and leave class.
Attendance Matters - as do our Attendance Records. We've noticed an increase in the number of excused absences for students but then the students come to school, and it causes some confusion with the record keeping.
First - THANK YOU for reporting the absence! That is a critical information that we need. Secondly, we are so glad when the students here, but want to make sure they are supposed to be here, when they've been excused for the day.
Parent/guardians can report full or partial days absences. Students should not be reporting their absence (with very rare exceptions). Please be specific with dates and times when you call in so we can keep our records accurate.
Reporting an absence can be done in ParentConnect or by calling our Attendance line at 907-742-1832. Also - ALWAYS leave a message. Our front office secretary is juggling 6 phone lines, and multiple people in the office at any given moment. She is constantly checking messages in between all the things she is managing. Leaving a message is the fastest way to get information to the office regarding attendance.
We appreciate your continued support!
Only a Parent or Guardian of the student can excuse a student's absence, tardy or request a Blue Pass. The parent/guardian must be listed as a primary contact and they must call from the number that is listed in Parent Connect.

Bartlett students will be included in a poster session at the Alaska Marine Science Symposium(AMSS) this year about the work we collaborated in with Fish and Game in Mrs. Matsuoka's and Mrs Capron's Marine Sciences classes. These activities were very engaging and fun for students! Dimond High School Students also participated in their own classes and are included on the poster as well.
Native Youth Olympics has started and is still recruiting athletes. Here you see Michael Johnson studying, because grades matter with Aamira Lalor kicking in the background. There is a photo also for Aamira kicking one foot high kick. On their knuckles the guys are getting ready for seal hop, you will see Niessan moving forward in Seal Hop. Some of our games mimic animal motions as it was a hunting skills. Jumping forward is Gavin Lalor in Scissor Broad jump an important skill when maneuvering on ice.

With the district's Chromebook 1:1 policy, and the recent audit, we'd like to take the time to, first, thank you for your assistance in auditing and taking inventory of the Chromebooks earlier this week. As you can imagine, this is a major undertaking and took a lot of coordination between IT and each school individually, and then coordinating with families. So THANK YOU!
Please help us take care of these devices.
Please don't eat or drink around the Chromebooks.
Please don't share your Chromebook or charger with others. At Bartlett, we approve of 1 or 2 school appropriate stickers on the Chromebook, and charger. Since all Chromebooks look the same, its easy to mix them up. Stickers are a temporary solution to easily identify it as your own. Replacement Chargers are $20 and Chromebooks can be up to $240.
Please do not decorate with anything permanent or hard to remove. (no markers, paint)
Please don't cover the entire cover with anything.
Please store your Chromebook in a safe place, away from extreme cold/heat, where it wont get stepped on or knocked down.
Never share ANY log in credentials like usernames and passwords on any device to protect your privacy and information.
Please report any problems right away to Student Services. Sometimes, accidents happen or a Chromebook just stops working correctly.

The PE department offers a variety of classes for students of all grades and ability levels including: Adventure 101, Basketball, Dance, Recreational Games, Soccer, Volleyball, Weight training and Yoga. We strive to support students in developing their fitness, gaining sport/activity specific skills, forming friendships, and cooperating in teams. PE teachers each have a few students they want to highlight below:
Second semester PE is off to a great start! I would like to highlight 3 student athletes that go above and beyond every day in soccer class. Horacio Tuisamatatele, Calvin Saephan and Ocean Lor. These three seniors are helpful, hardworking Teachers Aides who are leaders on and off the soccer field. Thank you for your hard work boys, I am grateful for your help and very proud of you! —Ms. Harris
Great year so far in the gym! This is my rookie year in the world of physical education, and I've been welcomed with open arms from staff and student alike. Highlights from first semester include our badminton tournament, some class vs class kickball, and Brandon Otero scoring over 100 on the pacer test (twice). I want to take a moment to recognize a student I had in basketball class first hour, Gabriel Burns. This dude loves basketball and shows up every day ready to play. He hustled at everything he did including fitness Monday's, warmup laps or drills, and of course the games. It was a great first semester and I'm looking forward to running it back again. –Mr. Harley
Three kids who do a great job of working hard and following directions. They are on time and great leaders: Ashley Snow, Kent Yang and Jonxy Santiago-Sanchez. In the picture are two students I had a Wendler. It has been awesome to see students I taught in middle school here at Bartlett. –Mr. Newsome
I want to give a shout out to Poulima Tofiga and Miricle Tuuaga. They are always asking about how they can help and taking initiative to work with other students in class even if they don’t know them. I appreciate their outgoing nature and ability to communicate well with both peers and adults. --Ms. Marine
I’d like to give a shout out to student Rose McGowan for helping me and her classmates in the life skills class. Making them feel welcome and helping them understand the movement for our dances. --Mr. Carrillo
I want to give a big shout out to Juan Diego Murillo Ibarra in my 4th period Weight Training class. This guy is one of the most self-motivated individuals I've ever met in my life. From his warmups to his weight training regimen, Juan is one of the most driven athletes I've had the pleasure of having in our Bartlett weight room. Thank you for being such an incredibly ambitious student in class! –Mr. Larrecou
Keep up the great work and thank you for encouraging others to stay active!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Beginning February 4th our school will be conducting a state required assessment for English Language Learners. This assessment is called ACCESS and provides important feedback about the progress of our English Language Learners in Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing. Students will take the test using our school’s computers. Only students who are currently identified as members of the English Language Learners (ELL) Program will be assessed. Most of the assessments will be completed during the first two weeks of February but some may continue into March. More information about the ACCESS assessment can be found on the Alaska Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s ACCESS page, http://education.alaska.gov/assessments/elp.
If you have any questions about this test, you are encouraged to contact us here at school (907-742-1814). You may also contact the District’s ELL Department at 742-4452. Information about the English Language Learners Program in the School District can be found on ASD’s website.
As always, with testing, we ask that families plan so that their students are in school and are well rested for testing. Your patience and support for this process is very much appreciated as this assessment does provide useful information that helps our district and school improve programs for English Language Learners.
Sincerely,
Val Baalerud
Bartlett Principal
Starting mid-January 2025, students in grades 9-11 will complete school year 2025-2026 course requests using Student Connect. This process will replace paper utilization and manual course entry by counselors so more time can be allocated to working directly with students.
Course request windows will remain open during the following dates:
01/21-1/31: Incoming Seniors (current 11th)
02/3-2/14: Incoming Juniors (current 10th)
02/18-2/28: Incoming Sophomores (current 9th)
Process for this year:
Instead of completing a paper form, students will enter their course requests using computers via Student Connect, with guidance from School Counselors.
Once students have entered course requests, parents/guardians can log into Q Parent Connect and view the selections. To view student course requests:
Log into Q Parent Connect, then select the 2025-2026 track
Click the (+) sign next to Requests, located on the left side of the screen
Note: Parents will not have the ability to edit course selections, this must be done via Student Connection
Students will be able to edit their selections until the end of their class’ course request window by logging into their Student Connect account.
After the window has closed, please contact your School Counselor for any changes.
Please note:
These are course requests, not a preview of student schedules:
Final schedules in the fall may vary depending on credit status, enrollment, staffing and seat availability.
Master schedules and course offerings will be finalized over the summer and schedules will be available in August during registration.
Counselors are available in their offices to answer any questions that students or parents may have regarding course registration.
If students do not wish to use the online process, they can work with their counselor one on one to select their classes

Life happens and that means accidents happen. Food or drinks are spilled, pants get ripped. Unfortunately, sometimes we get sick and can't make it to the bathroom fast enough, or cycles surprise us and start early. Its always so frustrating and sometimes SO embarrassing.
The Bear Den is a great resource that we are so grateful to offer our students.. If you don't know what the Bear Den, think of it as a FREE thrift store. It has provided many items for our students in times of need. However, we have limited supplies, styles and sizes in the Bear Den and its certainly not enough to cover repeated events that can be prepared for, so its a good idea to keep some extra clothes in your locker, just in case.
Speaking of the Bear Den, we accept donations! With spring cleaning approaching and you clean out your closets, please consider donating gently used items to us. We also are always in need of brand new underwear in all sizes. Thank you for your generosity.
The nurse's office if for acute care only. Acute Care is for active, but short-term treatments for an injury or illness, the nurse's office is not for long-term heath treatment. Please see your doctor. Medications can be given with a valid prescription or the above form filled out annually.
Parents: Please be sure your student is bringing and wearing their corrective lenses (contacts or glasses) every day at school. Vision and hearing screenings are required and being performed at school for all New-to-District, 10th grade, and IEP students. Students who cannot pass either of these screenings will require follow-up appointments with their Health Care Provider. Contact the nurse if you have questions.
Want to make the grade? Don’t want to call out sick, again? Planning to attend the holiday extravaganza at Auntie’s house without bringing the flu bug like last year?
We would love for everyone to have a wonderful, healthy winter. This can be challenging at times with weather changes, increased travel activity, and the influx of friend and family visitors. Unwanted germs love these changes… it’s like a free vacation for them! They get a free ride to a new state or house, warm environment, and the perfect host (uh, that would be YOU)! Keep these freeloaders from spreading by:
Washing your hands
Dress warm in cold weather (yes, wear the hat and gloves)
Eat healthy (proper nutrition really does make a difference)
Drink plenty of water (don’t forget your water bottle!)
Stay home with a fever of 101 or higher, you have active vomiting, or active diarrhea
Cover a cough or sneeze
And please, please don’t share! Don’t share towels, chapstick, food, or anything else that might be contaminated with germs. Please stay happy, healthy, wealthy, and wise.
Now is a great time to make an appointment for your student to get a physical with their regular doctor during summer break. All student athletes need to have a physical within the past 18 months.
High school fall sports include: running, swimming, volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, riflery, flag football (girls), and football (boys).
If you want your student to be seen in the school clinic, you can request a physical with this link
https://forms.gle/DUMfETYDpArMaV23A
Don't wait until the last minute to get a physical!
Questions: 907-742-0479
Please call if you would like to give input about the school clinic.
We understand everyone wants to smell nice, but please be mindful of the amount of fragrances you are applying. All ASD facilities are fragrance free due to the number of people who are heavily affected by fragrance sensitivities and allergies.
Students should not be spraying any scented products at school. Please leave these items at home, and be mindful of the amount of these products you use at home prior to coming to school.
ASD has implemented the use of RAPTOR Technologies ensure that our schools are safe places for our students and staff. For additional information, please visit https://www.asdk12.org/raptor .
Please note that you will need to show ID when checking in and checking out of the building.
