Message from your Principal:
Dear Hanshew Families,
We made it, December is here! We have about 2 1/2 weeks of the 2nd quarter before Winter Break and we want our students to finish strong. Please encourage your students to check their canvas and Q assignments and talk to their teachers about their grades.
Please remind your students to wear coats, warm clothing, and proper shoes. Open toe shoes such as crocs, flip flops, birkenstocks, and the like will not be allowed due to safety reasons.
There is no school for students on Friday, December 17th, that is the end of the 2nd quarter. The Winter Break is from December 20-January 2nd. Students will not have assignments during the break. We want our students to relax and enjoy time with their families and friends. Some student schedules will be changing in January for the 2nd semester. Some elective classes will end and others will begin. Counselors will allow for elective class changes the first week of January .
Just another reminder, masks are required for everybody in the school. Please send your student with masks to wear each day.
Please check our website for upcoming events and activities. if you have questions or concerns, please contact the front office at 742-9930.
As always, thank you for your support, patience, and understanding as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic!
Sincerely,
Dr. Lakhita Hodge
Hanshew Middle School Principal
December is a wonderful time to be at school. Let’s finish the 2nd quarter strong! Here are some reminders to review:
Be on Time! Make sure you come prepared for class and get to school on time. Students having to go back to their locker after the class has started is a disruption, so try to remember to get supplies you need for class.
Attendance: Come to school, however if you are sick stay home and feel better. If you are absent, remember to make up any work you missed.
Dress Code Reminder: Pants with holes in the upper thigh area need to be covered up with long shorts or leggings, no skin should be showing. All backpacks and purses need to stay in the locker. Please see the Hanshew Student Handbook for more details on our school dress code.
Student Drop-off/Pick-up: Thank you to all the parents using the parent drop off South Entrance. Do not park or enter through the North entrance, as this is reserved for busses and staff. This helps keep the traffic flow moving when we all use the correct entrances. Please do not turn left when leaving Hanshew from 7:45-8:15am and again 2:30-3:00pm as this clogs up the traffic and it is hard for busses to get in and out safely.
Safety: Every month we will practice an evacuation drill, so please make sure students wear proper shoes and dress appropriately especially during these colder months. Students need to walk safely in the halls and outside near the busses. This past month students have been “slapping” each other on the bottom, back, and/or hand “playing around”, however this behavior is not acceptable, please remember to keep hands and feet to yourself in the halls, in line, and in class.
Discipline: Most students overall are doing well. Some students sneak on their phones or have their earbuds in their ears in the hall, they will be asked to take their phone and/or earbuds to the office and parents will need to pick it up. Please remind them to keep phone or earbuds at home or put it away during school. If your child gets a detention and they are not serving their detention by the end of the week, they may be asked to come to after school detention, 3:00-3:30pm. Parents will need to come pick up their child at 3:30pm.
Sports
Wrestling and Volleyball are coming to an end. We have tournaments and Jamborees this month. Come watch Hawk sports but remember students must be accompanied by an adult who will supervise them. Students cannot just be dropped off. Show your school spirit and dress in Red and Black.
Way to go Hawks, to our amazing coaches, athletes, parent volunteers, and families who do so much for our sports program.
Boys Basketball and Cross Country Skiing is coming up next in January, please get your paperwork in now and pay online unless you qualify to be waived, then just fill out the form in the packet.
Sincerely,
Maria Humecky, AP
