This course focuses on the dynamics of human learning and the psychological principles that serve as the foundation for educational practice. The general goal is to introduce students to the field of educational psychology and apply the concepts, theoretical principles, and research findings from the discipline of psychology to the planning and implementation of effective instructional strategies in the classroom. Major emphasis is placed on assisting students in gaining a functional knowledge of the ideas explored. This is the follow up course to Teacher Cadet—Experiencing Education, a pre-requisite for enrollment along with a 3.0 or higher GPA on an unweighted scale. Students receive dual enrollment credit through Erskine College.
Students in Ed Psy participate in a 40-hour field experience and teach a scored lesson to the class. Participating in field experience is crucial for potential future teachers, providing hands-on experience and application of the theories learned in a real-world setting. These students develop practical skills, understand classroom dynamics, build rapport with students, and learn effective teaching strategies while being guided by an experience teacher mentor.
