Aims of the competition

The Giuditta Pasta Memorial Kumamoto Reconstruction International Opera Competition was established to discover and nurture talented young opera vocalists from Japan and world-wide, and to support the expansion of their music careers internationally. This competition was proposed by the organizers of the Giuditta Pasta Memorial International Opera Competition in Saronno, Italy, to promote the international collaboration between Japan and Italy, and the recovery of Mifune from the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. As such, the first competition was held in 2022. Recently many excellent Asian-born opera singers have been recognized internationally, though many of them had the opportunity to study abroad in the first place. On the other hand, such opportunities remain lacking for many domestic musicians. Therefore, we plan to grant participants who excel in this competition the rights to compete in our sister competition to be held in Saronno, Italy to help talented young opera singers to expand their horizons.
