Literacy: this week we will be studying the phoneme [augh]. We will also be studying the suffix [ject] . look under the section homework for this week's spelling words. In Literature, we are continuing to read the book Voyage of the dawntreader by C.S. Lewis
Math: we will be reviewing the concepts of multiplication and division and give the students a benchmark assessment to see what they have retained from the beginning of the year. this assessment will not be graded, it is for teacher reference. We will also be having some fun holiday graphing and color by number sheets for students to enjoy!
history: second grade will be finishing up our anthology of the Lewis and clark expedition. they will be completing a Venn diagram comparing their life to Lewis and clark. They will also be creating a timeline and have a small assessment on this unit this thursday.
writing: Students will be continuing to create different types of poems. They will be working on final drafts of limericks and odes for our poetry cafe on Friday, December 22, Session 1 from 9:45- 10:30am and Session 2 from 12:00 to 12:45p.m. We hope to see you there!
Reading Logs will be turned in on Friday of each week so I can keep track of the reading times for my records. the more reading time they have, the better readers they will become. history: second grade will be continuing our anthology of the Lewis and clark expedition. they will learn about napoleon Bonaparte, the Louisiana purchase, and dangers that the expedition team experienced through the unknown territories.
writing: Students will be memorizing there was an old man with a beard limerick this week. they will also continue to create different types of poems. They will be working on final drafts of limericks and odes for our poetry cafe on Friday, December 22, from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Math: we will be starting a new unit on multiplication and division. This week , we will be teaching students that multiplication is just repeated addition. WE will be practicing multiplication of 0, 1, and 2s.
history: second grade will be continuing to read A Picture History of Sacagawea by David A. Adler and practice our skills in narration. students will pretend to be in the time of the expansion of the united states and how it would have felt to be sacagawea. they will write a letter about what their experience was and what they saw.
writing: Students will be memorizing Twas the night before Christmas for the winter performance on December 12th at 8:00 a.m. in the gym. they will also be learning and creating different types of poems. This week they will write cinquain, limerick, and ode poems to be added to their poetry books.
Homework: second graders will be responsible for 20 minutes of reading each night, either being read to or reading alone. They have brought a reading log home for you to sign . Math: we have started out unit on measurement. students have learned about centimeters, millimeters and meters. this week they will be learning about inches, feet and yards.
history: second grade will be continuing a new story about life after the revolutionary war called "Dear Benjamin Banneker " by Andrea Davis Pinkney. It is a true story of a free save who became a self taught astronomer and mathematician. In connection with the story, the second graders will be creating marshmallow constellations .
Science: second graders have been learning about the difference between an ecosystem and habitat. this week they will understand the difference of a food chain and food web. they will also be learning how animals in an ecosystem depend on each other for their survival.

Due to our PE being scheduled first thing in the morning (8:20-8:50), we have decided to allow a morning snack time at 9:00, in addition to our established afternoon snack at 1:00. Please allow your student to pack an extra snack to recharge for their morning learning! Thank you!
Reminder: K-2 will no longer be offering after-school tutoring. We are implementing small group differentiated instruction within the classrooms for reading and math.

Literacy: Ascent classical academy NOCO has adopted a new program in literacy called Orton- Gillingham. Students will be reviewing Phonemes, phonological awareness, and spelling rules. Every Friday we will be having a short spelling test with 10- 12 words. The students will be practicing the words in class and will have a copy in their Daily folder to study at home. The weekly words are also on the homework page of my website.
Math: we will continue this week with chapter 2 and creating Bar Models to solve part-part whole word problems. make sure you are reviewing the math papers that have been sent home for your child to be ready for the test next week.
history: second grade will be reviewing the revolutionary war from first grade using our new history curriculum. We are excited to introduce some new and exciting stories and activities to enhance the learning of the students. students will be writing a letter to a revolutionary soldier as if they were living in that period of history.

Literacy: Ascent classical academy NOCO has adopted a new program in literacy called Orton- Gillingham. Students will be reviewing. Phonemes, phonological awareness, and spelling rules. Every Friday we will be having a short spelling test with 10- 12 words. The students will be practicing the words in class and will have a copy in their homework folder to study at home. The weekly words are also on the homework page of my website.
Math: we have been reviewing skills from first grade to get prepared for singapore math. this past week we worked on subtraction with two digit numbers. this coming week, we will discuss strategies for mastering numbers up to the hundreds . Compare two-digit numbers and represent their relationship using <, >, and =signs. Order up to 4 two digit numbers within 100. Understand how three-digit numbers are composed according to place value.
each Friday , we will have a quiz on basic math facts learned from the week.

history: This past week we will finished up the geography of north, south, and central America and began our study of the constitution. This coming week Students will understand the
meaning of the Preamble to the Constitution. Students will be able to recite the Preamble to the Constitution by heart.
Science: second graders are continuing to learn about matter. This week they explored experiments with solids, liquids, and gasses. next week, we will list properties and measure different types of matter.

I would like to introduce our new PE teacher for second grade- Mrs. Roberts has joined us this year and we couldn't be more thrilled! The children have have joined in and welcomed her and apperar to be enjoying her classes. Question to review with your child from this week:
Who are some of the characters in charlotte's web? what is the setting?
What are the three states of matter? How are they different from each other?

Literacy: Ascent classical academy NOCO has adopted a new program in literacy called Orton- Gillingham. Students will be reviewing. Phonemes, phonological awareness, and spelling rules. Every Friday we will be having a short spelling test with 8- 12 words. The students will be practicing the words in class and will have a copy in their homework folder to study at home. The weekly words are also on the homework page of my website.
Math: we have been reviewing skills from first grade to get prepared for singapore math. this week we worked on addition facts and number bonds. next week, we will review and discuss strategies for mastering basic subtraction facts. each Friday , we will have a quiz on basic math facts learned from the week.

history: second grade has been reviewing basic map skills , compass rose, and map keys. They have reviewed the seven continents and five major oceans. next week we will finish up the geography of north, south, and central America.
Science: second graders are continuing to learn about matter. This week they explored experiments with solids, liquids, and gasses. next week, we will list properties and measure different types of matter.
Homework: second graders will be responsible for 20 minutes of reading each night, either being read to or reading alone. They will be bringing home a reading log after we have finished the formal testing , in their Gray Daily Folder. The reading log will be turned in on Friday of each week. In addition, they will have their weekly spelling words to study for a weekly Friday quiz. You may find these words on the homework subpage, under the heading Newsletter. Although there is no math homework nightly, you may see your child’s daily work that may need to be reviewed or finished . If you see this in their daily (Gray Folder), please review the concept or skill with your child. There is no need to return the math. As the first teacher, you may check your child's unfinished classwork. Each skill builds on the prior skills. we we continue to practice the previously learned skills during our time together in the classroom. We appreciate your partnering in your child’s success. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

Math: we have been reviewing skills from first grade to get prepared for singapore math. Students were given an end of the year assessment from first grade to see what skills were forgotten over the summer. As a result of the beginning of the year assessment, we will continue to practice first grade skills next week. We have been practicing addition and subtraction facts to 20 for our upcoming units, along with doubles facts, the 9 rule (make a 10 then add the ones in), adding double -digit numbers and rules of subtraction.

history: We are learning about where students live in relation to earth, continent, country, city and village. There is a packet of “where I live” that will go home in the Take-Home Folder next week. Check out the page with the student’s address. If they do not know their address, please review it with them at home. We will continue map skills next week.
Science: second graders have started to learn about matter. This week they began an experiment using salt and evaporation. They also created magic bubbles discussing the three states of matter; solids, liquids, and gasses. We will continue this unit next week.
