Michelangelo chose to represent David not after the victory with Goliath's head at his feet, but turning his head to his left, sternly, watchful of the approaching foe. His whole muscular body as well as his face is tense with gathering power. David exhibits the characteristic representation of
energy in reserve that imbues the tension of a coiled spring. The young hero's anatomy plays an important part in this prelude to action. His rugged torso, sturdy limbs, swelling veins and large hands/feet alert the viewers to the strength to come.
