The experiences and spaces for play we facilitate for children should reflect their ideas, aspirations, curiosities and next steps in their learning. It is through play that children learn about themselves and make sense of the world around them.
There are three different contexts within which children learn which create a different dynamic for the child and the practitioner and it is important that there are a blend of these. These are:
Child-led activities
Experiences that children control in terms of experience, time and resources.
Adult-initiated activities
Activities that arise from adult planning; sufficiently open-ended for children to work on independently until the adult is ready to support.
Adult-led activities
Activities which are based on the adults understanding of what young children should be taught and experience. These type of activities can introduce children to new ideas, provide opportunities for them to develop their skills and ensure that they experience all areas of learning.
