Children start by learning their individual and blended sounds. Once these are consolidated, they will progress onto word strips before moving onto books.
At Kellands, we follow the Oxford Reading Tree scheme - Biff, Chip and Kipper.
From Primary 3, children will start to focus more on the reading skills through their class novels.
This involves reading the novels as a class, in groups or individually as well as working on the 6 key reading skills (see "Key Skills" page).
Whilst reading the Oxford Reading Tree books, these will be sent home with the children to practise reading them and to discuss the stories.
We also encourage children throughout the school to be reading a text of their choice for enjoyment at home. This could be anything from a novel, comic, newspaper or audio books. See our 'Reading at Home' tab for links to online books and audio books.
We recommend 20 minutes per day.
At Kellands, we use a programme called Accelerated Reader. This helps us to see what books are most suitable for each child.
3 times a year, each child will do an assessment on it to check their level. This then gives the child a colour of book which links with our library system so that they can find books suitable for them. They can read this book during class ERIC (Everyone Reads In Class) time each day.
Each time they finish a book, they can do a quiz to check their understanding of it. Children can use the QR code opposite with their personal login and password to access quizzes.
Primary 4-7 also follow "Keep the Heid and Read". These are whole-class reading lessons focussing on different genres of text including poems, song lyrics, novel passages and newspaper articles. This is to expose and engage children in a variety of styles and genres.
