In 2020, nine artists were selected to receive Material Needs Grants, and now go on to display the work created with these funds a year and a half later.
This year's Material Needs exhibit includes paintings intertwining nostalgia with sociopolitical uprisings (Cassidy); welded steel sculpture (Lord); encaustic portraits inspired by 20th century Viennese Expressionism (Hamilton); printed-silk photographs that consider alternate forms of visual perception (Severance); embroidered life-size portraiture (Dillon); abstracted acrylic paintings utilizing sand and natural elements (Rodrigues); large-scale contextualized timelines on hand-painted panel (Fortin); hand-spun and -dyed sculptural fiber (Wakabayashi); and a series of paper-based works inspired by Indigenous teachings on humanity’s relationships to the natural world (Saffer).
Think beyond the wall! This online exhibition allows you to engage with each artist's creative process over the course of the grant cycle. Explore the work of the 2020-2021 cohort of artists, including work in progress, glimpses of artists' studios, and the evolution of each artist's body of work.

During exhibitions, ArtsWorcester's gallery hours are Thursdays through Sundays, 12:00 to 5:00 PM. Our galleries are always free and open to the public.
ArtsWorcester's main galleries are located at 44 Portland Street in downtown Worcester.
Masks are required for all visitors.
Parking is available at the Worcester Public Library (McGrath) Lot, Federal Plaza Garage, Worcester Common Garage, and Pearl-Elm Garage. Metered street parking is also available.
About Material Needs Grants
Grants are available to artists living in Worcester County who have been ArtsWorcester members for at least one year. Made possible by an anonymous donor, these funds support the supplies for the creation of new art in Worcester County, with grants ranging between $500 to $1,500. The 2020-2021 grants funded materials ranging from the smallest needle to a full-sized spinning wheel and TIG welding set-up. Since first awarded in 2013, these grants have helped advance the work of seventy-five local artists.
