What is a poem for two voices?
During this unit, you will have the chance to perform a poem in the style of a duet. When reading the text, you will find that sometimes, you read alone, sometimes you will wait for your partner to read, and sometimes you and your partner will read at the same time. Here is a sample of what this type of poem sounds like:
In the book, Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices, each poem is either about or related to an insect. You and a partner will have an opportunity to prepare this poem for a performance. In order to help you understand the poem, it is helpful to get to know the insect that your poem centers on. First, let's start by choosing a poem.

To make a good choice about which poem you would like to perform, it is best to preview all of them. Your teacher will spread the poems around the room in a large circle. With a partner, you will start at one of the poems. Try reading it with your partner. If you have an opinion about the poem, make a note on your note-taking page. After a minute or two, your teacher will signal you to move to the next poem in the circle. Repeat this process until you've had a chance to preview all of the poems. Don't worry if you don't have time to read the entire poem at each stop.

List your top three choices of poems on a slip of paper and turn it in to your teacher.
