Artist Statement
We all have moments we cherish and regret. Although it is impossible to capture every moment, art can recreate some of them. Recreating such emotions is natural, but one will realize that it is a beautiful life to surrender oneself to the flow of time through artwork, without the vain desire to pause it. I have too intended to capture certain events and emotions from my relationships with others in my artwork before they fade away, and also strived to transfer changing sceneries of the same place over time to my canvas.
I gain physical sensations(the five senses) from these instant moments and draw inspiration for colors and shapes. To capture the moments deeply etched in my mind, I drew memorable places, the human body, and different objects with brushes, pencils, and charcoal and used oil to implement my personal narratives. To avoid arbitrary expression techniques, I utilized ordinary and common materials to convey my unique insights and capture the development of my artistic sensibilities.
It is said that a painting is an accumulation of time. A painting is not just about the beauty of the final work but also about the artist's life lessons expressed in lines and colors, representing the artist's entire life. The artwork Life Has Clockwork, which I saw at the Nam June Paik exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea, gave me a profound insight into life. Even the master of media art could not go back in time and eventually passed away. A clockwork can exert physical force to move objects but cannot reverse or accelerate human life.
Therefore, art is about cherishing every moment of life, valuing its nobility and beauty, and preserving it in our hearts.
We evolve from the earth and go back to where we came from. If the origin of my life is an immensely vast land, it shall be fertilized with art, while a root of "me" planted deeply beneath. Here, I will create artwork that memorializes fleeting moments in my life freely and through experimental challenges.
