You can actually see all the content stored into a PS1 game just by reading it on PC.
It has literally zero protection on it, you can dump and make backup copies of your games without any third party tool.
Here is a fun example on Chrono Trigger.
Originally playable on SNES in 1995, it received a PS1 port in 1999 with added features.
By dumping the files from the disc, you will find a ROM you could use on an SNES emulator with .bin support. Source >HERE
That doesn't mean the PS1 had no protection at all, you can't simply read a backup CD-ROM directly into your console just after ditching into the files of an original game. If you want to know more about how the PS1 security was defeated, you can check out this excellent video !
