Websites and Apps

A website that I've enjoyed using with students over the years is 'e-ako'. It is attached to the NZMaths site, it is free and it uses visuals of equipment that we regularly use in classrooms.

It clearly tells a student what they will be learning as he/she completes each e-ako pathway. It has games to practise basic facts. Children earn points, trophies and certificates as they progress. It is continually being improved and it now has professional learning and development pathways for teachers to brush up their own skills and understandings. I have a teacher aide who has used this with students and she really rates it. There is now also a pathway called 'developing capability BTs, TAs and MSTs, which I will begin to work through with my PRT as part of our regular meetings.

What is e-ako maths?

  • e-ako maths is a resource created to support students' development of a sound knowledge and understanding of important maths ideas from levels 1-5 of the New Zealand Curriculum.
  • e-ako maths is designed to complement and support a classroom teaching programme and is not intended to be a stand alone tool for teaching these important concepts. The supporting resources linked below will help integrate e-ako maths into your class programme. Click to read about ways that the student e-ako can be used, both by students and as professional learning and development for teachers.
  • Each student will have their own account so that they can explore the material at their own pace. Each account needs to have a unique username, but the accounts can share an email address so you could use a class email address if you wish.
  • e-ako maths provides pathways of interactive learning modules (e-ako) for students to work through. Students can choose from the available e-ako, with assessment e-ako restricting access to more difficult material. Teachers who create a class for their students gain access to all available e-ako.
  • The student pathways currently available in e-ako maths are: fractions & place value, multiplication & division, algebra, geometry & measurement, probability & statistics, and problem solving. Click to download a map of the student e-ako content (xls, 59KB).
  • Each e-ako contains both teaching screens and interactive elements for students to complete. These interactive elements include matching tasks, multiple choice questions, and short answer questions.

My students also enjoy 'Sumdog'

My Year 3 and 4 students have been trialling 'matific' this year.

In previous years and at Year 5 and 6 level, we use 'mathletics'.
