Embedding Google Files into Canvas
How to embed Google files into a Canvas page so everyone can see them:
Option 1:
You can use the new Google LTI 1.3 plug-in (NOT the old Google Apps plug-in, which is still listed).
Click on the plug icon at the top of your text box, choose Google LTI 1.3 (or View all if you haven’t used it before).
Choose your AHS Google account.
Find the file you want to embed, select it and click Add.
You may notice that the sizing is off when you embed this way. To fix that, you will need to go into the HTML view (by clicking on the </> icon below the text box), finding the height and width values, and changing those. Click on the </> again to see how it looks before saving.
Option 2:
Start in your original Google file, and make sure you have the sharing settings set to “Anyone on the internet with this link can view”.
Click File, then Share, and then Publish to the web.
If it is not yet published, click on Publish, and then OK.
Click on the Embed tab, and copy the code there.
Go back to your Canvas page (get rid of the old embed if there is one!) and put your cursor where you want the embed to go.
Above the text box, click on Insert, then Embed, or click on the embed icon (the cloud ) in the tool bar.
Paste the code you just copied and click submit.
Check to see if what you wanted to embed is now embedded where you want it. If so, save it!
Presentations should embed at the right dimensions.
If you’re embedding a doc, you will want to change the size so the whole doc shows on your screen. Follow these steps to do so:
Click on the </> symbol under the text box where you embedded your doc.
In the code you pasted in, you will see it ends with:
=true"></iframe></p>
Place your cursor between the “ and the > that come after the word true and add the following. (Just copy and paste the next line at that spot.)
width="900" height="1200"
To double check that it worked, click on the </> again and see how it looks.

Why is the method here important?
How you embed a Google doc or slides into your Canvas course will affect who can see it.
The tool to avoid is the “External tool” for Google apps. The external tool is what you are using if you click on the plug icon on your page and select Google Apps. If you use this version of embedding, your students (and you) will be able to see it, but parents/observers will not as it will force a Google “authentication” that you need to have an arrowheadschools.org address to get through. Using the embed code from the google doc bypasses this process.
If you don’t remember whether you used this method, there are a couple of ways to check:
Take a look when you go to a page with something embedded. Do you get a 3-5 second gray box that says something about needing to authorize before the slideshow or document then loads? If so, you’ve used the external tool.
Click on the HTML button (pictured below) under the text box in edit mode on that page. If you see the words external tool in that code, you’ve used it.
