Education Centers
For those wanting to support their child’s learning in a particular area, grade-level curriculum connections are noted in parentheses below. However, a resource need not be aligned to your child(ren)’s grade level to be a fun and meaningful learning experience!
Amherst’s public libraries have museum passes that you can borrow for free or discounted admission at many local museums. It is best to reserve these ahead of time online or by calling 413-259-3091.
Beneski Museum of Natural History (Amherst)
A must-see for anyone who is interested in dinosaurs, fossils, rocks, minerals, and the history of the Earth (especially our little corner of it). Free admission. (Grades 3, 4, 6)
Hitchcock Center (Amherst)
This education center focuses on environmental education, with an emphasis on sustainability and connecting with the natural world. Includes animal exhibits, scavenger hunts, nature trails, a “living building," a bird and pollinator garden, and many special programs/events for all ages throughout the year. Free admission. (Grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary (Easthampton)
This Mass Audubon sanctuary offers several trails (including a sensory trail), a wildlife observation tower, a nature-play area, a “habitat quest” for discovering the sanctuary, and many special programs/events throughout the year. (Grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
This butterfly conservatory houses over 4,000 native and tropical butterflies in a garden environment. (Grades K, 1, 3, 5)
Great Falls Discovery Center (Turners Falls)
This education center focuses on local natural and cultural history, includes indoor and outdoor learning opportunities, and offers many events throughout the year. Free admission. (Grades K, 2, 3, 4, 5)
Children’s Museum (Holyoke)
A museum full of hands-on learning opportunities, mostly related to the physics of forces, motion, gravity, water, light, and magnetism. (Grades K, 1, 3)
View exhibits about wildlife, minerals, dinosaurs, living aquatic ecosystems, and molecules, then stop in for a show at the planetarium. (Grades 3, 5, 6)
Connecticut Science Center (Hartford)
Over 165 hands-on exhibits featuring physics, biology, chemistry, technology, and engineering. (Grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
