The subjects offered each year are based on student choice and available staffing. This can change from year to year, and there will be a minimum number required for the Elective to run. Changes in staffing will also influence the Electives that can be offered.

Combining Year 9 and Year 10 into Stage 5 Electives means that more subjects can be offered for each year group.

All students are treated equally, regardless of whether they are in Year 9 or 10, and complete the same work and assessment tasks. Year 9 students can be awarded First Place and receive a Merit in the Elective subjects at the end of year Presentation Assembly.

100 Hours means you study the course for one year.

200 Hours means you study the course for two years.

Elective subjects are offered on a two-year cycle, which means the options change each year.

Students may elect to stay with one or both of their Electives in Year 10.

Alternatively, they may wish to study two new courses in Year 10.

Some subjects are more in demand than others and may be offered on two lines.

You can only study the subject on one line.

Industrial Technology is often in high demand.

A decision is made each year to determine whether students can study both Timber & Metal. This is based on the number of students choosing the subject, the Year 10 cohort who wishes to continue studying 200 hours and the availability of staff and resources.

All discussions about Distance Education will be with Miss Bailey.

Study via Distance Education requires discipline and self-motivation. Only students who have demonstrated that they are independent learners will be considered for this option, and it should not be assumed that an application to study via Distance Education will be accepted.

Subjects studied can only be those not offered at school.

There is a cost payable by families for courses studied via Distance Education ($340 in 2026).

Students will be told their allocated Electives before the end of Term 4 (approximately Week 9)

If students have missed out on their choices a conversation will be had with them about alternatives before this.

Allocating teachers to classes is a complicated process and this may not be finalised until the new school year. Students will find out their teacher when they receive their timetables at the beginning of the new school year.

Changes to elective subjects are handled on a case-by-case basis. To discuss a possible change, please contact Miss Bailey as soon as possible. While some changes may be possible, they are generally only considered very early in the new school year.

Please note that a request to change subjects is not guaranteed to be approved. Whether a student can change depends on several factors, including the reason for the request, available space in other elective classes, and the timing of the request during the school term.
