We are going to cover a lot of exciting material this year! We will begin the year with a short stories unit where we will read and respond to several different short stories. Later in the year we will participate in several reading units. Common themes in our reading units are: identity, home, race, culture, and economic differences. Students will also be expected to read one independent reading book (of their choice) per quarter. This may result in creating an independent reading project at the end of each quarter.

In addition to reading, we will work on refining your research, analysis, grammar, and writing skills this year. Writing units will include essay writing and creative writing. With each and every unit of instruction, there will be an emphasis placed on discussion. This means that students will be participating in small-group and whole-class discussions based on the topic/text being taught at the time. Students will also prepare for the MCAS Language Arts examination throughout the year.
