The Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy is a graduation distinction that encourages students to pursue literacy in two or more languages, honors the language skills our students attain, and serves as evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers and college admissions offices. Students meeting the Massachusetts Department Elementary and Secondary Education requirements for the Seal of Biliteracy will receive this designation on their transcript upon graduation. Arlington also partners with the Language Opportunity Coalition to offer supporting biliteracy awards.
Proficiency Tests
Arlington Public Schools will facilitate the proficiency test requirement for students by offering approved language assessments in-district at least annually. Students who scored 4 or 5 on an AP Exam in their junior year do not need to take an assessment, but must still apply for the Seal.
Awards
Students who meet the criteria will be recognized at a celebration annually each spring and will have an official MA Seal of Biliteracy affixed to the diploma or transcript. To qualify for any of the awards, a student must meet all of the graduation requirements and the additional criteria in the chart above.
