What advancements in technology allowed for J-Pop to the state that it is in today?
This an example of an MIDI also known as a Musical Instrument Digital Interface
In the mid 20th century, electronic music was created and began to surge in popularity. Many key developments such as the transition from discrete components to integrated circuits (ICs), the adoption of microcomputer technology, and the emergence of MIDI as a standard for communication between musical instruments and computers have led to the change and advance of electronic music. Since J-Pop has such a wide variety of genres, this allowed a lot of artists to experiment with a variety of instruments and sounds that were not available before. This allowed for J-Pop to fit the tastes of many different people and attract many more listeners. (A review of Electronic Music Instruments.)
The evolution of distribution of music started with live performances, which then evolved to sheet music then to portable music devices. The release of the headphone stereo created by Sony allowed for enjoyment of music almost anywhere. However, this later changed to mobile devices and is referred to as "digital distribution". This allowed for anyone with a cellphone to be able to enjoy a variety of ringtones and songs provided through their cellphone provider. This ease of access of music plays a key role for promotion and accessibility within the J-Pop industry. (“The Impact of Digital Distribution on the Japanese Music Market.)
