Functional Real-World Math skills are practiced daily in our class. Instead of simply solving equations and adding/subtracting- we also learn about banking, using a debit card, shopping and budgeting for groceries, paying bills, reading a paystub, menu math and any other math skill needed for success as an adult. Our Eagle Bites Work Based Learning Business also teaches money skills as students count, add and give change to customers weekly. They also find totals earned, totals spent and compare balances weekly.
$$$ - We use simulated Income from Classroom Jobs: Ttheir earned weekly Classroom Job "Income" as Morrison $$ is used to purchase fun items in my store once or twice per month: candy, chips, beef jerkey, gatorades, gum, fun coupons, etc... If Job sheets are not completed correctly or approved and signed every Friday, their "payroll" is deducted and it impacts their "paycheck." This is good experience for earning $$ for your work and budgeting/saving for items they want.
*For Real-world math and vocational experience, students also receive classroom citations and/or classroom bonuses based on choices, behavior, expectations, work ethic, following technology policy, etc...This is modeled after a job write up or a pay raise, etc...
