Welcome to my webpage! My name is Carrie Peck and I am the dyslexia specialist at Argyle West Elementary School. Through this website, my goal is to provide information and resources to parents, students, and visitors about dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

Definition adopted by the Board of Directors, International Dyslexia Association, November 2002, and is included in the Dyslexia Handbook, Revised 2021 by the Texas Education Agency.

Daily practice....the best way to retain information and remember things we learn is to practice over and over and over. Our Take Flight Program includes lots of repetition.

Academics represent everything we learn at school. Reading and spelling are necessary skills needed for learning in all academic areas. Our Take Flight Program systematically teaches both decoding and encoding skills. (Reading and Spelling)

We learn all about the English language so that it makes sense. Learning rules and situations for reading and spelling makes our life easier! We also learn the history of the alphabet and the English language, including morphology (the study of words and how they are formed) and etymology (the study of the origin of words).

Just like scientists learn through discovery, we also learn about reading and spelling through discovery. Students are encouraged to look for patterns and similarities in words in order to come up with conclusions about how words are read and spelled. In addition to learning how to read and spell, we learn about the science of the English language.
