If you’ve fallen out of love with poetry or never quite “got it” or are just looking for inspiration—this hands on workshop will revel in what makes poetry magic and vital to all kinds of learning.
Participants will leave with practical resources for utilizing poetry to spark joy, develop practiced and accomplished writers and to elevate student writing of in all genres.
Open to all, this workshop is especially appropriate for teachers looking to rekindle their excitement about using poetry in the classroom.

We have so many poems to capture the hearts of our beloved, but what about when that heart feels more like a heart attack? Where do we turn when we need to let that heart go? In this workshop, geared at all teens, we will explore the good in goodbye. Teens will gain the poetic tools necessary to "break it off" without breaking hearts. They will choose fourteen concrete images or action verbs from a free write to create a poem that will send their beloved on their way, maybe not with a smile, but with a sense that they may love again.

An introduction and definition of ekphrastic writing. Some example of poems written by ARGS students for "Views of Virginia". Art and poetry will be created in response to the poems by ARGS students. Then a show-and-tell of everything made in session!
