Ms. Lowell

Welcome! I'm Ms. Lowell! I have been teaching at Arete for four years. I've taught every course in the Latin and Ancient Greek curriculum at Arete, ranging from 7th grade to seniors (somehow, I haven't taught 6th grade yet). I am also serving as head of the language department for the 2026-2027 school year. 

My degree and background is in Classics and Ancient Mediterranean studies, with emphasis on literature in the original Ancient Greek and Latin. In pursuing this, I have been reading Latin for thirteen years, and Ancient Greek for eight years. I specifically have studied Homeric poetry and Latin epics and elegies in depth, as well as a broad selection from ancient Greek and Latin literature. I also have a minor in mathematics and a minor in social theory. 

In the summer of 2023, I completed a course of study with the American School of Classical Studies in Athens in which I studied the archaeology of 27 caves across Greece with religious, historical, and mythological significance. I travelled for a month to visit all of the caves we studied and hear lectures from archaeologists who were in charge of the sites, as well as museum curators, researchers, bioarchaeologists, and classical scholars. I find the cave to be a completely transformative and mythical space within the world. After coming back from this, I started to think of my classroom as a sort of anthropological "cave", in which we enter the space together, have a completely unique academic experience, and then must leave the space and return to the world outside the classroom.
