8th graders in Spanish B created hand-crafted mini-altars to honor and remember loved ones and inspirational figures who have died. Students incorporated traditional elements, such as calaveras and marigold (cempazuchitl) flowers, the 4 natural elements and symbols/offerings that represent the person or animal who passed. Students also wrote ofrendas in Spanish to accompany their altars.
Creating these altars enabled students to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for Día de los Muertos, while honoring the traditions and their own loved ones in a developmentally-appropriate way.
