The band program begins at the 5th grade level for Arcadia students. Students will be fitted and then select their instruments in the fall. The 5th grade band performs with the 6th grade at a winter concert as well as at the Middle School Spring Concert.
What's going on in Elementary Band?
The 5th grade band is taking their first steps on their instrumental music journey. When first learning a wind instrument, it takes a significant amount of time to develop good tone and the ability to consistently use the right fingerings. The 5th graders are currently meeting once a week in sections: woodwinds on Tuesdays, brass on Thursdays, and percussion on Fridays.
The 6th grade band has been working on exercise and etudes to expand their musical vocabulary. This group is able to start going beyond the notes and use dynamics and articulations to make their music more expressive. They have begun working on their Spring Concert music.

How can I help my student learn and succeed on their instrument?
Learning an instrument is tough. It’s very tough. I always give beginning band students plenty of warnings that they are about to begin a very difficult process but one that will be very rewarding if they commit to it. The more time a student invests in practice, the easier it becomes for them to play their instrument.
Beginning band students are usually using muscles in a completely different way than they ever have before. They may experience fatigue after playing just 5 minutes. This is completely fine! Have them take breaks. Playing 5 focused minutes at a time 3-5 times a day is going to be way more manageable for them than sitting down for 20-30 minutes at a time. If they seem to be experiencing any sort of abnormal soreness or aching have them stop practicing until they see me at school.
As musicians develop their technical skills, they should also acquaint themselves with playing in front of others. If you have a guest over to the house, have your student play a few pieces for them to showcase their progress. This will help build your student’s confidence and pride in their skills.
So to recap, here are some ways that you can help your student succeed on their instrument:
Have them practice consistently. Every day is great! Practicing 5 days a week is an accomplishable goal.
Shorter practice sessions, several times a day is better than one big chunk of time. Having your students play 5-10 minutes at a time is great for beginners.
Have them play for people. Relatives, guests, or even just a short concert in the living room are all great audiences for your beginning band student.
