HISTORY

This event was developed in 2003 by SAAAPA Class President Tom Monko, of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine PA Program, and faculty member Michael Huber, MMS, PA-C, DFAAPA who was the founding committee chair (Professor Huber is presently an Associate Director and Director of Clinical Education and Director of Outreach for Arcadia University’s PA Program and a graduate of Drexel University PA Program). The inaugural event consisted of only three PA Programs (Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Drexel University, and Philadelphia University) and has now grown to twelve participating programs. The current PA Programs participating are: Arcadia University (Glenside and Christiana campuses), Alvernia University, Delaware Valley University, DeSales University, Drexel University, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Salus University, Saint Joseph's University, Temple University, Thomas Jefferson University-Center City, Thomas Jefferson University-East Falls/NJ, and West Chester University.

The PA Olympics was recognized at the 2016 Physician Assistant Education Association Education Forum when Michael Huber accepted the Partnership Award on behalf of the participating Physician Assistant Programs and their fundraising and collaboration efforts under his leadership in developing the PA Olympics. This national award is given each year to recognize an individual or institution that provides support to one or more PA programs and that has made a noteworthy contribution to PA education.

PA Olympics celebrates its 22nd year this April, 2024. Money is being raised for For Pete's Sake Cancer Respite Foundation

Annually, in January, a volunteer representative team consisting of PA students and faculty advisors from each participating PA Program is appointed to the PA Olympic Committee. At the initial meeting, students nominate a community-based organization to be considered as the charity recipient. Some of the selection considerations include the charity’s history and mission, target population and demographics served, and how the charitable donation will be used if received. Once each potential charity recipient is presented, the committee then votes on the organization they would like to support that year.

The PA Program that raises the most funds per student is awarded a trophy for its outstanding fundraising efforts.  This annual event has donated over $245,000 to date to local charities.
