13 December 2024
Kia ora,
Over the next few days, your child's books and any spare stationery will be sent home. As an Enviroschool, we encourage you to recycle any partially used books. These can be brought to your child's 2025 class to be reused, reducing the need to buy additional new books (though you will still need to purchase some items from the stationery list).
Please ensure your child keeps their reading folder as it is required for next year. New stationery for 2025 can be purchased from the Qizzle website in early January. The site is currently being updated, so we kindly ask that you wait until then to make purchases.
All school reading and library books should now have been returned. Any lost or broken books will need to be paid for. If you come across any over the break, please bring them to your child's new teacher on January 31st, our school's drop-in day, along with the named stationery.
In Year 2, your child may not have structured literacy homework. Please keep their book and revise it frequently to support their continued learning.
Sprinklers: On Monday, weather permitting, the children will have the opportunity to play outside in the sprinklers. Please make sure your child brings their named sunhat, swimwear and a towel to school, or alternatively, a change of clothes to get changed into. Please make sure all items are well named (incl school uniform).
To our tamariki and whānau, it has been a privilege to teach your tamariki this year. We wish all our whānau a relaxing and enjoyable summer holiday.
Ngā mihi,
Nicky, Lesley, Angela, Tash, Pam, Nancy, and Megan

End of Year Reporting graphs (for those that have been at school six months)
These graphs will be available to view on HERO later in the term. You might notice a difference between the graph showing your child's progress as ‘working towards’ and your child’s comment showing progression. This discrepancy occurs because the assessments often encompass various other skills, which might not align precisely with the content with which the current graph was made for. These graphs will be changed in due course as the new curriculum rolls out.
Classes for 2025: These will be shared on Friday 6th December. Tāmariki will also spend time with their new teacher, and their class for 2025, on Tuesday 10th December.
Please refer to the school End of Year Celebration Dates notice on HERO regarding important dates coming up over the next few weeks.
Have a wonderful week.

Bring bring a teddy to school on Friday 18th October (term 4). This will be instead of 'sharing'.
27th September
Kia ora,
Re: Term 4
Due to the next cohort of children arriving in term 4, we will be working in two separate teams. Angela and Nicky will work as one team and Lesley, Tash and Pam will work as the other team. In the mornings, please remind your child to stay in their own space (or to play close by, on the outside court).
Most children will continue to work with their current structured literacy teacher, but may go to another ‘space’ to do this. They will then return back to their akomanga class after their lesson.
Handwriting books: most children will be provided with a new handwriting book for next term. This item will be charged to your school account. Please email or see your child’s teacher if you already have a 1B2 JWBJ Junior handwriting book (14mm ruled) at home, as your child’s teacher will be ordering one for your child. Any half used books can be reused for next year.
Sickness - please note that we have many children off with a vomiting bug at the moment. We have also sent quite a few home.
Teddy bears - please bring a teddy bear on the first Friday back (instead of sharing). Thank you.
Have a wonderful spring break with your whānau.

Kia ora whānau,
Thank you for supporting the children in our recent Fun run/Celebration of Learning and during our Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. We know this brought a lot of joy to our tamariki. Once again they made us proud! We hope you will have a few minutes to pop by and view your child's art in our schoolwide Art Exhibition in the coming week (see dates below). The end of Term 3 is next Friday 27th September and we wish you all a safe spring break with your whānau.
First Aid: This week Shayne from St John's visited and taught the tamariki how to respond in a variety of everyday emergency scenarios. Please ask your child to demonstrate how to respond if they were to find you lying down and unresponsive. they have been taught how to roll you into the recovery position. It is a useful time for children to learn your home address (when talking to emergency services) as well as showing your child how to access the emergency button on your mobile phone in case of an emergency. These have been discussed in class but as phones differ it is best to talk this through with your child. This was a great learning session. You never know when this knowledge can save a life.
Sunhats: All children will be required to wear a navy full brimmed/bucket hat next term (and in term 1). No hat = no play. We kindly request that sunscreen is applied by caregivers before school. This is part of our schools sunsmart policy. Caps are not suitable as they do not cover the back of the neck. Please keep the hat in the side pocket of your child’s bag so they have easy access to this. It is a good idea if you can sew something small on the outside of the hat so it is easily recognizable. Please NAME the hat.
Books: all library and reading books need to be returned by the beginning of week 10 for a stocktake. Lost or damaged books need to be paid for. Teachers may send home alternative reading books, activities or games in week 10.
Absences: If your child is sick, please notify the office before 9am with the reason for absence. It is great if you let your child's akomanga teacher know, but please also let the office know as well. Please follow the latest Ministry of Health guidelines with regards to sickness, as staff or other children do not wish to get sick either. 22nd August 2024
Kia ora whānau,
It was lovely to see so many excited tamariki at our Junior Disco last Friday. This week we have had a special visit from a firefighter and learned about fire safety. See below for more information. Please note that our Teretere Olympic Cultural Dress-up day is on Wednesday August 28th. This celebrates the end of our Movement Inquiry and is for Teretere children only. No coin required. For more information see dates for your diary below.
Welcome to our new tamariki and whanau who have started in Whaea Pam, Lesley and Nicky’s spaces.
Illness: we have sent a number of children home today (Thursday) with diarrhea. A vomiting and diarrhea bug, plus covid are doing the rounds. Please follow the latest MOH guidelines with regards to this. Children should be kept home from kura for at least 48 hours after the last episode to stop it spreading. Thank you for your support with this.
Fire safety: This week we had a firetruck and firefighter Kerry in. We talked about fire safety, smoke alarms, crawling out of our house and meeting at a safe meeting place. Please discuss and then practice this with your child at home. Discuss your ‘safe meeting place’ at home.
Uniform: Please ensure your child wears the correct uniform to school. Track pants or shorts (navy - no labels); Shoes: no crocs or high heels. Earrings: studs.
Sunhats: All children will be required to wear a navy full-brimmed/bucket hat (not a cap) next term. No hat = no play. We kindly request that sunscreen is applied by caregivers before school. This is part of our school's sunsmart policy. Please keep the hat in the side pocket of your child’s bag so they have easy access to this.
Missing money - A child has found some money in our learning space. If you think it is yours, please see Trine or Justine in the office.
Handwriting books (JL2W) - A few children are nearly at the end of their handwriting book. If this is your child, please bring in another one from home. If purchasing one please ensure it is a JL2W or speak to your child’s ako teacher and one will be ordered for them and added to your account.
Sharing: This is every Friday. Tamariki may bring something to school | kura to share and talk about it. This is part of our oral language programme. This may be something they have made, a photo or a small toy. Children are not to play with items before school or during learning or breaks - please remind them of this. Please do not bring very precious items to school, as staff cannot be responsible for lost or broken items. Ask your child's akomanga teacher where to put their items on Friday. Items are not to come to school on other days. Thank you for your support with this.

Kia ora whānau,
It has been wonderful to welcome the sunshine back this week, after a miserable week 4. This week the tamariki enjoyed a visit from Maddie, our Olympian Ambassador. Ask your children about it, we may have a few budding Olympians in Teretere!!
Covid. We have a number of covid cases in the hapori. Please pick up some free test kits from the pharmacy and test regularly. Check the expiry date if you have some at home. If your child has covid, please let the office know as we need to monitor this as a kura/school. Follow the latest Ministry of Health guidelines. In general, please do not send unwell children to kura|school, as we will send them home again. Thank you for your support with this. Please notify the office of any absences before 9am.
Rubella. We have had a case of Rubella in Teretere, so please be mindful of any symptoms your child/ren may be experiencing. This is highly contagious and can be problematic to pregnant women, young babies and those not immunised.
Reporting to parents/whānau - term 2
If your child started school in term 1, you will receive structured literacy reading and writing comments and a math comment sometime this term. These are uploaded to Hero. You will be given the opportunity to book an appointment to discuss your child’s learning at our learning conferences in week 7. Book online on Hero. Please only book in with your own child’s akomanga teacher. If you need to cancel your appointment or wish to have an early morning one e.g. 8.15am, please email or discuss this with your child’s teacher as we only have a few available.
On Thursday 13th June, we would love it if you could pick your child up at 1.30pm to enable us to hold the learning conversations.
A friendly reminder, please do not compare ’report’ comments with others (e.g. siblings), as every child’s progress is different.
Soft drink bottles required
Can you please collect any soft drink bottles (we do not require the tops) and give this to your child's akomanga teacher over the next week. Thank you to those who have already added to our collection. As we require one per child it would be great if you could bring in as many bottles as possible.
It would be wonderful if you could please cut the top off like the picture (below), as we will be using these to make lanterns for matariki over the next few weeks. At this point in time we only have a few bottles (10ish and we need 80!), so please ask your relatives, neighbours or friends to collect these as well. Thank you.

Pink Shirt Day 2024
Ararira Springs Primary is joining the movement by hosting a Pink Shirt Day on Friday 17 May 2024, and encouraging our staff and students to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying! Bullying in Aotearoa is a real problem. We have the third-highest rate of school bullying out of 36 OECD countries and one in five workers feels discriminated against or bullied at work. Those bullied are far more likely to experience mental health issues.
Pink Shirt Day works to reduce bullying by celebrating diversity in all its forms and supporting schools, workplaces and communities to be safe, supportive, welcoming and inclusive for everyone. To celebrate this important kaupapa we’ll be wearing pink (alternatively wear school uniform) on Friday 17th May.
We’ll also be fundraising to support Pink Shirt Day. A gold coin donation will be appreciated. Money raised goes to The Mental Health Foundation. By taking part in Pink Shirt Day, we are part of a powerful movement to spread aroha and kindness and end bullying. The focus this year is: 'Being an upstander". More information can be found here.
Illness: We have the following illnesses in the hapori:
Vomiting/diarrhoea
Covid
Please be vigilant and follow the latest Ministry of Health Guidelines to stop them spreading. Notify the office before 9am if your child is unwell. It is great if you notify the classroom teacher, but please let the office know as well. We do not always get the message on time or may be away ourselves.
Sharing day: This is every Friday. Tamariki may bring something to school | kura to share and talk about it. This is part of our oral language programme. This may be something they have made, a photo or a small toy. Children are not to play with items during learning or breaks - please remind them of this. Please do not bring very precious items to school, as staff cannot be responsible for lost or broken items. Ask your child's akomanga teacher where to put their items on Friday. Items are not to come to school on other days. Thank you for your support with this.

Kia ora whānau,
It was a wonderful experience last week when the Christchurch Museum outreach programme came and brought their resources to our hapori. The tamariki learnt about how early people came to Aotearoa |NZ; navigation and how they found land. The tamariki also learnt what food they took and how they carried water. Take a look at our photos on our 'Home' page above. This was a great start to our inquiry this year which is 'Movement'. We will further connect this learning to our NZ Aotearoa histories learning and weave this in with local pūrākau | traditional stories over the following terms.
We have had a lot of our local pre-schools visiting over the past few weeks. This week we welcomed: Annabelle, Amelia, Isabella, Liam and Maddison to Teretere 3 for their first pre-entry visit. These tamariki will start with Nicky and Tash on Monday 11th March and will then move to the new class with Tash in term 2. This class will share a space with Lesley.
Hi-vis vests: Due to the lack of sponsorship and administration, the school no longer provides these to our tamariki. Please purchase your own. These can be purchased from The Warehouse or similar. We have a few left available to purchase on Kindo. All children will be required to wear these for our trip at the end of the term.

Kia ora whānau,
Welcome to our fortnightly newsletter and a huge welcome to all our wonderful families/whānau. It has been lovely to get to meet you all and especially work with your amazing tamariki. They are settling in beautifully and we know there will be a lot of tired children (and teachers) over the next few weeks.
The schools newsletter (Click to Connect) and this notice on our blog is where you will find information regarding our hapori | space. We are trying to limit the amount of emails whānau are receiving. We apologise in advance for this long email.
Staffing: Whaea Tash will be working in Teretere 3 on Fridays. She will also be releasing the other Teretere teachers throughout this term, before she starts the new class in term 2. We also welcome our fabulous learning assistants who you may also see around: Fable, Charlotte, Debbie, Kim, Etrechia and Jeni. Please make yourself known to our staff.
Homework: Please read to your child a variety of books every day.
Maths: enjoy reading numbers together e.g. number plates; in the supermarket. Ask your child to count forwards and backwards from any number (not just 0 or 1). What number comes before or after it? Count objects together e.g. can you please get me 6 apples?
Karakia: Our morning and afternoon karakia are at the bottom of this page to learn if you wish.
Structured literacy: Reading folders will be going home from week 3 after assessments have been completed (from 12th February-). Heart words are in the back of their books to learn and worksheets in the front. There is an information sheet for you to read. Please note that if your child already knows their 'sounds' or alphabet 'names', they may repeat these letters throughout the programme. This is to ensure that they can also write these letters using the correct formation (lower case), quickly and automatically. If your child is reading books, these may also be repeated as we revise reading and writing sounds and books, after a long break. This is to ensure your child is confident with their structured literacy skills and with their new teachers. Please ask if you have any questions.
Sharing information sheet: please return this to your child's akomanga teacher by the end of this week. You are welcome to email this. Thank you to those of you who have already handed these in. Another copy of this was attached to the Hero notice on Friday 2nd.
Hats: Please ensure your child has a named full brimmed sunhat at school everyday (even if it is cloudy or wet). From Monday any tamariki who do not have a hat will be required to play in one spot in the shade. No hat = no play. Apply sunscreen before school. Thank you for your support with this. Please leave the hat in the side pocket of your child's bag, so it is easily accessible.
Sushi and Subway lunches: Sushi day is Wednesday (please bring a spoon) and Subway is on Fridays. If you wish to use this service, please pre-order on the Kindo app.
Blog photos: please email your child's akomanga teacher if you do not want photos of your child on our blog or on the schools facebook pages.
Lunches: We are a 'water only school'. Please no juice or flavoured milk (or sweets) at school. Please leave these items for home. Thank you.
Library: Books can go home for two weeks, however most tamariki have them for one week. Lost or damaged books need to be paid for. Please ask your child's akomanga teacher where they would like library books to be returned.

Kia ora,
Some of you may have missed the Stationery email from last year. As an Enviroschool, we encourage you to bring in any half used books back to school for use in the learning space.
Stationery items can be purchased from the website: Qizzle. Click on: School packs>Ararira Springs Primary>Teretere. Please name all books and the reading folder. The other items are shared, so they do not need to be named. Give these items to your child's akomanga teacher on Tuesday 30th January (which is a drop in session - no school uniform is required on Tuesday). More information about the drop in session will be sent out next week.
School begins on Wednesday 31st January. Please ensure you arrive between 8.30am and 8.50am. Pick up is at 3pm. Your child's akomanga teacher will let you know what door to pick your child up from on Tuesday. As parking is at a premium at the end of the day, please allow for this or walk. Please do not be late, as this can stress new learners and we do have meetings after school.
More information can be found on our blog. This is presently a work in progress. Please make yourself familiar with this site as this is where we share our notices, photos of learning and other information.
We hope you are all having a happy summer holiday and we are looking forward to seeing you in the next few weeks.
