James I. Sim (1927-2009) was Andrew Hoinacki's first drumming instructor. 

In addition to teaching drummers, Mr. Sim instilled effective practice methods and demonstrated important things like properly wearing the uniform and marching. His son, James S. Sim, has carried on this legacy as a teacher and leader within the pipe band community. Both men were critical in Andrew's formative drumming years and their influence led to his lifelong career as a player and educator.
