Step 1 strategies
Forming 10
Say a number between 1 and 10. Your child should answer with the number required to form 10. Example:
Adult: "If I say 3. . . "
Child: "3 + 7 =10"
Adult: "If I say 4 . . . "
Child: " 4 + 6 = 10"
Doubles
Say a number between 1 and 9. Your child should answer by doubling the number. Example:
Adult: "If I say 4 . . . "
Child: "4 + 4 = 8"
Adult: "If I say 6 . . ."
Child: "6 + 6 = 12"
Step 2 strategies
Make 10 extended
Say a math fact with 8 or 9. Your child should answer by solving the equation. Example:
Adult: "9+7 "
Child: "9 + 7 =16"
Adult: "Why?"
Child: " 10+8 =18 so 9+8 is one less"
Doubles + 1
Say math facts wiith a slight difference (+/- 1). Your child should answer by solving the equation. Example:
Adult: "6+7"
Child: "6 + 7 = 13"
Adult: "Why?"
Child: "6 + 6 = 12 so 6 + 7 is one more"
