How should I prepare for my advising appointment?
You should prepare for your advising appointment by bringing any questions that you have, a tentative schedule, summer course plans, and information about classes offered if you plan to study abroad.
What is the difference between part-time and full-time?
A full-time course load means that you are registered for at least 12 units. In most cases, this equates to four classes. A part-time course load is any number of classes less than 12 units.
What is the recommended course load? Should I take 12, 15, or 18 units?
We recommend that students take a course load of 15 units to get to 120 units within four years. 15 units each term means that you will get 30 units a year and reach the 120 mark needed for graduation within four years. Some majors may require more units to graduate which may impact your time to graduation.
Where can I find specific information about a class?
You can go to the Undergraduate Academic Catalog and type in the class name to find out more information! Doing this will show you a description of the class, the units, and if there are any pre-requisites.
What if I want to change my major or declare a major?
Great! If you know what major you want to declare, you should meet with the Academic Success Coach that supports that major. If you need help deciding a major, our front desk staff can support you in pairing you with a coach.
When should I see my Academic Success Coach?
We recommend that you see your Academic Success Coach before it's time to register. Advising season happens once a semester (March and October), prior to registering for classes.
Do I need an appointment to see my Academic Success Coach?
The short answer - yes. When you schedule an appointment, your Academic Success Coach will be able to look over your schedule and the classes you've already taken so that they are prepared for you appointment. It will also give you a set amount of time to work with your Academic Success Coach.
We do offer walk-in appointments, but only during registration and add/drop periods.
What is a catalog year?
The catalog year is the year that you entered the university and/or declared a major. This catalog gives the guidelines that you are held to in order to complete a degree.
