In 2010, we were preparing to move into our current building. Our fifth-grade learning coaches Brenda Leighton and Jill Holcomb facilitated a PBL in which our learners, on touring the new building noticed the sound problem in our learning commons. Our learners worked with our resident inventor, Dr. James West, inventor of the electret microphone to provide sound-reducing solutions for our library. To assist in the process, a parent, Mr. Fertig who was a sound engineer, worked with learners to test materials. Our creative and enthusiastic learners shared their ideas in a video conference with Dr. West at Johns Hopkins University. Two of the solutions were combined in a reflection with Dr. West. Years went by and the 5th graders became seniors. They finally had the opportunity to complete the project combining a water feature and plants that could provide our community with produce. In April 2017, along with the biology learning coach from the STEM HS, Coach York, learners built the Tower Garden for the current 5th-grade class.
