Meet Coach Samantha!
Coach Samantha is a Teen Librarian at the Akron Summit County Public Library. She works at the Main Branch in downtown Akron. You may recognize her as she has worked with us this year presenting virtual book talks on Tuesdays. She loves coding and hosted an after-school coding class for our school also! She has some great books to share with our YA (young adult) readers recommended for grades 7 & 8. Check out her lists below!
I'm currently reading Fireborne, by Rosaria Munda.
"Later, he would be known as the First Protector, and under his vision the city would transform. Serfs would be freed, schools would be built, and dragons would, for the first time, be ridden by commoners.
Before that, he was the leader of the bloodiest revolution his people had ever seen."
Fireborne is a Russian-Revolution-inspired fantasy with dragons and dystopian politics, perfect for fans of the animated movie Anastasia, The Hunger Games, and Ashlords.
Dragonlords were overthrown during a bloody revolution. Now anyone, regardless of class, has the chance to become a dragonrider. Annie and Leo were orphaned in the revolution; now they're competing for the top role in the military's dragonriding fleet. Despite their close friendship, their backgrounds couldn't be more different: Annie's serf family was executed by dragonfire; Leo's dragonlord family was murdered by revolutionaries. Everything changes in an instant when survivors of the revolution appear, bent on reclaiming what they lost. With war on the horizon, Leo must choose whether to betray his friends or face killing his only remaining family on the battlefield. The sequel, Flamefall, just came out, so you won't have to wait to find out what happens next!
I’m currently reading The Ones We’re Meant to Find by Joan He. The Ones We’re Meant to Find follows two sisters trying to find their way back to each other. Cee wakes up on a deserted beach with almost no memory of her past except that she has a sister and she must get back to her. Kasie has spent 3 years mourning the disappearance and presumed death of her older sister. Set on a future earth beset by the terrible consequences of climate change where people spend most of their life in a virtual “holo” world to minimize energy spent to travel or creating unnecessary items, this sci-fi thriller is perfect for fans of Scott Westerfeld (Uglies) and Neal Shusterman (Scythe).
I'm currently reading A Chorus Rises, by Bethany C. Morrow, the companion novel to A Song Below Water. It comes out on Tuesday, June 1st, so learners can put it on hold now! Both books take place in a slightly magical version of Portland, Oregon where sirens, mermaids, and gargoyles are all real. A Song Below Water follows Tavia, a Black siren who must keep her identity - and her powerful voice - a secret. When she is wrongly stopped by the police, she accidentally uses her siren call. Tavia's sister Effie is also going through something magical - patches of scales are appearing on her body and her hair seems to have a mind of its own. A Chorus Rises takes place a year after the original story, following popular influencer Naema, an Eloko with a melody that can charm those around her. Naema was accused of "outing" Tavia as a siren, and she feels she's being unfairly cast a villain. Both stories use the fantastic to examine being Black in America, touching on everything from police brutality to media perception to code switching.
This during-reading response strategy is a very simple technique as long as students connect what they draw to what they are reading and realize that they do not have to be artists. Students can be encouraged to draw people as stick figures and not to worry about how elaborately they draw.
