VHE's school counseling program is a part of the total school program and aids in the learning of the 'whole-child'. Each day, I strive to provide a child-centered, preventative, and developmental counseling program. The main focus areas are academic, personal/social, and career exploration. This year the counseling program will also begin working intentionally to incorporate the APS 5 measurable methods in order to to build a district-wide culture of student support. Click HERE to learn more about the APS 5.
All classes at VHE will be taught a classroom lesson based on the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Mindsets & Behaviors. Topics will be either social/emotional, academic success, or career awareness. Staff and students will also be guided in SEL Lessons provided by the district.
The counselor as well as our school social worker will facilitate small groups for limited amounts of time (usually once a week for 6-8 weeks) to develop skills and provide support. Topics vary from year to year and are based on need as expressed by data, school staff, parents, and/or students. Parent/guardian permission will be obtained.
The school counselor meets with individual students who might need short-term support, help with solving a problem, or need to express feelings/concerns. These sessions are brief, and students can be referred by school staff, parents, or themselves. If more time or intensity is needed, the school counselor can provide a list of local therapists, psychologists, or psychiatrists who might be able to better serve your child’s needs. School counselors are not licensed and do not provide long-term therapy during the academic instructional day.
