Household Sizes for 6th Grade Students
The bar graph shows that the most common household size for 6th grade students at Long Middle School is 4 to 6 people. This data is essential to assist in calculating average grocery costs and similar values for households in the Brown's Mill area.
THE INFOGRAPHICS
The students put together several infographics like the ones below, showing their research and analysis of data surrounding food insecurity in the area. In addition to identifying what food insecurity is and discussing the current local food security status, they also evaluate different food options in an active effort to consider healthier food options amidst the conditions of the food desert.
Infographic 1
This flyer includes a shocking calculation that a household size of 6 people (within the average size range according to the graph) could accumulate monthly grocery costs of almost $2000, indicating a dire need for more affordable healthy food in the area. The student later evaluates their dinner's healthfulness before creating a new dinner idea that eliminates the unhealthy aspects and expands on the healthy parts of their previous meal.
Infographic 2
This student recognizes the shortcomings of their dinner, lacking vegetables, and invents a new dinner idea incorporating ingredients from a variety of food groups—including fruit, vegetables, and healthy fats. In evaluating the ingredient costs of the healthier meal, the student applies their analysis to a real-world context that can enable them to help address food insecurity in real life.
Infographic 3
This student's calculation for a family of 6 also puts monthly grocery costs in the thousands, reaffirming the need for more affordable and healthy grocery options in Atlanta. The student recognizes the unhealthy salt content in different common meals, and they combat it with the creation of a homecooked dinner idea that incorporates various healthy ingredients with salt in moderation.
Student Slideshows
Students in 6th grade created presentations to raise awareness about food deserts and food insecurity, the first step to bringing about change.
Food Security Status in Photos
Students in 6th grade took photos of food options they encounter throughout their daily lives. While some meals are healthier than others, there is room for more fresh, nutritious produce across the board—an issue which raising food insecurity awareness can help to combat.
Several of the photos exhibit healthier options such as fruits and vegetables, relatively varied food groups, and low-processed foods.
Unfortunately, many of the options depicted show alarmingly high quantities of sodium, sugar, and unhealthy fats. Many of the foods are also very processed.
