Week #28 (3/16-3/20)
Thank you for making our first Volume Zoo such a wonderful success! We had an incredible turnout and truly enjoyed sharing our students’ projects and writing with all of the families and loved ones who came to support them. Your encouragement at home and your presence today meant so much to our students.
This special event would not have been possible without you! Thank you for being such an important part of our classroom community! 🦁📦

Reading, Writing, & Grammar
This week 3/16-3/20, we will be focusing on...
Reading: We will continue unit 8: The selections in this unit will be all about water and what it means to people in different societies. Students will explore a Greek myth and read an interview with a landscaper, a tall tale, and an informational text.
Writing: I am so proud of how hard everyone worked on their Write Score assessment! We should get the results back in about 2 weeks. Next week, we will continue to work on opinion techniques and begin writing a new opinion essay with the topic: Should money mangement be taught in schools?
I have a section on my Google classroom with anchor charts that students can use to assist them with their writing. It is under "Writing Anchor Charts/Resources".
Grammar: We will continue 5-A-DAY (week 9) which is a language skill review that will be done at the beginning of each class M-TH. It covers all grammar standards for 5th grade ELA. Every 3rd week, students will have an open notes assessment.
The March IXL leaderboard is live! This month, instead of most proficient skills, it will track who has the most mastered skills in 5th grade ELA. The top 5 students will go to the treasure box at the end of the month!
Upcoming graded assignments:
Reading: Thursday 3/19 - Unit 8 week 2 quiz
ELA: Friday 3/20: 5-A-Day Quiz
*Reminder*: If your child fails a test (below 70), they will be given a re-take assignment or will be able to make test corrections to earn points back.
This week in math, students were introduced to the coordinate plane! We learned how to set up a blank coordinate plane and practiced plotting ordered pairs in Quadrant One. Students did a great job learning how the x- and y-coordinates work together to locate points.
Next week we will begin Topic B, where students will identify and generate numerical patterns while continuing to strengthen their skills with graphing on coordinate planes.
Upcoming graded assignments:
*Reminder*: If your child fails a test (below 70), they will be given a re-take assignment or will be able to make test corrections to earn points back.
As we enter testing season in the next few months, you may be asking, "How can we prepare at home for milestones?" Well, worry no more! We have compiled a list of all the skills assessed on Georgia Milestones and provided an IXL Study Plan students can use to prepare. They will just find the skill they want/need to practice, typed in the code to IXL and work away. Happy studying!
*PAPER COPIES WERE GIVEN ON WEDNESDAY 1/21*
IXL Lessons to Review (R) or Preview (P) Upcoming Skills
Points on a coordinate plane ZRK
Graph points from a table HWV
Objects on a coordinate plane NTR
Graph points on a coordinate plane AST
Well… plot twist: we didn’t get to ANY of this. 😂 So next week, we will actually be introducing this new unit… for real this time!
Students will explore the exciting world of electricity and magnetism! They will obtain, evaluate, and communicate information as they investigate how electricity works and how it powers many of the devices we use every day. Students will also learn about magnetism and discover how magnets and electricity are connected. Through hands-on activities and investigations, students will build their understanding of these important forces and how they affect our world.
Upcoming Graded Assignments:
Microorganisms Unit Test- Thursday (3/19)
Next week, we will wrap up our World War II unit by reviewing key topics such as the changing roles of African Americans, D-Day, the Battle of Iwo Jima, and Atomic Bombs. Students will also revisit newspaper articles from the time period to better understand reactions on the home front.
Upcoming Graded Assignments:
WWII Unit Test Friday (3/20)
