APS-GHP SS Overview

The Social Studies Department is committed to providing all students equitable access to enrichment opportunities. The Superintendent will not allow inequitable treatment of students as measured by student academic outcomes, discipline occurrences, and/or resource allocation. Therefore, the Governor’s Honor Program nomination process is not limited to students with AP, Honors, or Gifted designation. Social Studies teachers may nominate any sophomore or junior that has demonstrated proficiency, aptitude, and passion for Social Studies. Once students are nominated, they must accept the nomination by completing the Student Nomination Acceptance Agreement, which outlines the expectations for participation and their commitment to the process. Nominees must participate in at least four of the six GHP preparation sessions for the oral interview and simulation experience to be considered for an interview at the local level. During the local interview process, judges will determine if students will advance to the state-level competition. Students are not selected based on gender, race, or school, nor does the program have a bias for juniors over sophomores. All decisions made at the local level are final and cannot be appealed due to the large number of nominations.
