When we were last in Western Europe (at the end of Unit 5), the continent had been plunged into chaos following the fall of Rome at the hands of invading Germanic tribes. We return to this area in Unit 10, and examine the changes brought about by the Dark Ages, and how the people who lived in Europe adapted to a lifestyle of uncertainty and chaos. We will also explore a new socio-economic system that emerged called feudalism. In the second part of Unit 10, we will analyze the factors that ultimately caused feudalism to fall. By the end of this unit, we will find ourselves in a Europe that has seen trade and cultural diffusion brought back to life, ready for the Renaissance.
