Gather.town Conference Room A

Abstract (Click here to Expand)

Participants will hear about one physicist’s journey from teaching how she was taught to teaching like a scientist, a journey that most participants are now beginning. Participants will learn what the research on learning tells us, and will share their ambitions and concerns about incorporating active learning into their courses.

PARALLEL SESSIONS

B3.1 - Interactive Lecture Demonstrations (ILDs): A Research-Validated Strategy for Active Learning in Lecture

David Sokoloff , Ronald Thornton

Session documents

Recording here

Gather.town Conference Room B

Abstract (Click here to Expand)

Interactive Lecture Demonstrations (ILDs) is a complete classroom strategy that makes the

learning in a large (or small) introductory physics lecture class more active and engaging and has been demonstrated to significantly improve understanding of physics concepts.

This strategy is intended for those whose introductory class structure includes lectures, and especially those (1) who want to experiment with small incremental changes to their introductory courses, (2) who are interested in making more dramatic changes in their courses and/or (3) who are looking for strategies to use on a regular basis in a flipped classroom.

You can download the complete book, Interactive Lecture Demonstrations, containing all the published ILD materials at: https://pages.uoregon.edu/sokoloff/ILDbook0116.pdf

PARALLEL SESSIONS

B3.2 - Engaging Students and Supporting Learning with PhET Interactive Simulations

Ariel Paul

Session documents

Recording here

Gather.town Conference Room C

Abstract (Click here to Expand)

In this session, participants will be introduced to the suite of PhET simulations. We will discuss where the simulations and associated resources can be found, consider learning goals for students, explore a variety of strategies for using the simulations in various learning environments, and create sim-based interactive engagement questions.

PARALLEL SESSIONS

B5.1 - Constructing Understanding in Small Collaborative Groups

Ed Prather, Rachel Scherr

Session documents

Recording here

Gather.town Conference Room B

Abstract (Click here to Expand)

Getting students to meaningfully engage in collaborative groups can significantly improve student learning. We will look at several effective collaborative learning activities that foster student-to-student discourse - allowing students to validate each other’s correct ideas, refute each other’s incorrect ideas, raise important questions, and deepen students’ engagement. In classes that use collaborative group work, instructors have many important jobs that go beyond just lecturing. We will discuss how we can create classrooms in which students feel empowered to express their science ideas an increase their understandings and abilities.

B5.2 - Goals and Strategies for Physics Lab Classes

Natasha Holmes

Session documents

Recording here

Gather.town Conference Room C

Abstract (Click here to Expand)

In this interactive session, we will identify some of the possible learning goals for laboratory courses and participants will identify the goals appropriate for their courses and institution. We will break out into groups to separately discuss goals, challenges, and opportunities for labs at the introductory and advanced levels.
