Foundations of Physical Education

90000 - Foundations of Physical Education

Grades 9-12

Foundations of Physical Education is a requirement for graduation and is a prerequisite for all elective physical education courses. The course emphasizes human movement, physical activities, and physical fitness that contribute to a lifetime commitment to activity and fitness. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the course.

Lifetime Sports I & II

90100 - Lifetime Sports

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Foundations of Physical Education

Fee: $15.00 per year plus additional fees for field trips

Emphasis is placed on learning and improving techniques, skills, and strategies in lifetime sports: bowling, golf, badminton, angling, racquet handball, archery, table tennis, tennis as well as some team activities. This class uses a variety of trips to expose the student to a number of lifetime activities. Trips to the golf course, archery lanes, rock climbing gym, and bowling alley allow the students to improve their skills and strategies in those activities. Units in mountaineering, fishing, and orienteering expose the students to a number of non-traditional physical education activities they can utilize after they have graduated.

90101 - Lifetime Sports II

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Lifetime Sports I and/or Instructor’s Approval

Fee: $15.00 per year plus additional fees for field trips

Lifetime Sports II emphasizes an extension and refinement of techniques, skills, and strategies from activities directly related to Lifetime Sports, and continues to prepare the student to aide with teaching and coaching of these activities to young children. The student is exposed to a focus on individual, dual, and small group non-traditional activities that tie to activity and life outside of school. This more in-depth focus brings in cross curricular content through the use of outdoor, recreational, and leisure activities that may include but are not limited to: golf, badminton, swimming, bowling, archery, tennis, fishing & angling, orienteering, weight lifting, cycling, mountaineering, and racquet handball. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the course. Skills and knowledge acquired in this course can be applied to careers in hospitality and tourism, education and training, arts and entertainment, and health and bioscience pathways.

Team & Individual Sports I, II, III

90160 - Team and Individual Sports I

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Foundations of Physical Education

Grades 10-12

Year-long course; 1 credit

Fee: $15.00 plus additional fees for field trips

Team and Individual Sports emphasizes techniques, skills, and strategies for participation in team and individual sports, and prepares the student to aid with teaching and coaching sports to young children. The student is introduced to at least, but not limited to, six of the following sports or activities: badminton, European handball, flag football, soccer, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, racquetball, and softball. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the course.

90161 - Team and Individual Sports II

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Team and Individual Sports I or Instructor’s Approval

Fee: $15.00 plus additional fees for field trips

In Team and Individual Sports II, students add to and improve techniques, skills, and strategies acquired in Team and Individual Sports I. They may have the opportunity to help with teaching and coaching sports to young children. The student is exposed at greater depth to strategies of at least six of the following sports or activities: badminton, European handball, flag football, soccer, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, racquetball, volleyball, rugby, and softball. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the course.

90162 - Team and Individual Sports III

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Team and Individual Sports II or Instructor’s Approval

Fee: $15.00 plus additional fees for field trips

In Team and Individual Sports III, the student develops, clarifies and applies techniques, skills and strategies of the course, and continues to prepare in the aiding, teaching and coaching of sports to young children. The student, demonstrating leadership

skills and techniques, refines strategies of at least six of the following sports or activities: badminton, European handball,

flag football, soccer, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, racquetball, volleyball, rugby, and softball. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the course.

Swimming

90300 - Introduction to Swimming

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Foundations of Physical Education

Goggles and Swim Suit Required

Introduction to Swimming covers basic swimming skills and safety in the water for oneself and others. Focus areas are development of skills, knowledge about swimming; cooperative behavior; and appreciation for activities that contribute to a healthy lifestyle throughout life. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the course.

90301 - Intermediate Swimming

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Introduction to Swimming or instructor’s approval.

Goggles and Swim Suit Required

Intermediate Swimming builds on swimming skills developed in Introduction to Swimming and teaches survival skills. Emphasis is on basic water safety rules, distance swimming, diving, and competitive swimming. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the course.

90302 - Advanced Swimming

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Intermediate Swimming or instructor’s approval.

Fee: $20.00 per year

Goggles and Swim Suit Required

Advanced Swimming emphasizes advanced skills in aerobic, survival, and competitive swimming. The student learns or improves his or her ability to demonstrate five swim strokes, four competitive strokes, a 30-minute survival swim, and aerobic swimming skills. He or she successfully completes exit skills (e.g., front crawl driving, jumping into deep water). Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the course.

Weight training I-III

90422 - Weight Training I

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Foundations of Physical Education

Fee: $15.00 per year

Lifting belts are recommended.

Weight Training I is a basic weight training course. The student investigates strength training principles, routines, fundamental techniques and methods of lifting for the development of major muscle groups. He or she learns nutrition and diet information for

health and fitness. Safety techniques and proper spotting are emphasized. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the course.

90422 - Weight Training II

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Weight Training I

or instructor’s approval.

Fee: $15.00 per year

Lifting belts are recommended.

Weight Training II is an intermediate weight-training course. The student investigates physical fitness, health maintenance, power lifting, and Olympic-style lifting techniques and methods; he or she implements safety techniques and proper spotting in all activities and practices. Emphasis is placed on healthy, natural strategies for improving muscular strength. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the course.

90423 - Weight Training III

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Weight Training II or instructor’s approval.

Fee: $15.00 per year

Lifting belts are recommended.

Weight Training III is designed for the advanced student who is earnest about strength development. The student continues to investigate physical fitness, health maintenance, power lifting, and Olympic-style lifting techniques and methods while

implementing safety techniques and proper spotting in all activities and practices. In addition, the student develops an individualized weight-lifting program and demonstrates and participates in fitness testing techniques. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the course.

Yoga and Pilates

90450 - Yoga/Pilates I

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Foundations of Physical Education

Fee: $15.00 per year

The student may be required to provide his or her own individual mat and proper yoga attire is required.

This course combines movements from yoga and Pilates. The focus is on learning motor strategies, gaining body awareness, and practicing stress reduction, breathe work, balance, and functional movement. The student gains muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. Areas of study include, but are not limited to, movement forms, movement concepts and principles, physically active lifestyle, physical fitness, personal and social behaviors, cultural awareness, and personal enjoyment. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

90451 - Yoga/Pilates II

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Yoga/Pilates I or instructor’s approval.

Fee: $15.00 per year

The student may be required to provide his or her own individual mat and proper yoga attire is required.

Yoga/Pilates II builds on the skills acquired in Yoga/Pilates I. The goal is achievement of healthy behaviors that endure throughout life. The student works at a pace that fits with his/her established personal goals. The class focus is on learning motor skills and strategies, body awareness, stress reduction, breath control, balance, and functional movement. The student gains muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. Areas of study include, but are not limited to, movement forms, movement concepts and principles, physically active life style, physical fitness, personal and social behaviors, cultural awareness, career options, and personal enjoyment. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

90453 - Yoga/Pilates III

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Yoga/Pilates II

Fee: $15.00 per year

The student may be required to provide his or her own individual mat and proper yoga attire is required.

Yoga/ Pilates III builds on the skills acquired in Yoga/ Pilates I & II. The goal is achievement of healthy behaviors that endure throughout life. The student works at a pace that fits his/ her established personal goals. The focus of this class is on motor learning strategies, body awareness, stress reduction, breath work, balance and functional movement. The student gains muscular strength, endurance, coordination, and flexibility. Areas of study include, but are not limited to, movement forms, movement concepts and principles, physically active lifestyle, physical fitness, personal and social behaviors, cultural awareness, career options, and personal enjoyment. Reading, writing, speaking and research strategies are integrated throughout this course.

Sports Medicine I, II, III

90700 - Sports Medicine I

Grades 9-12

Fee: $25.00 per year

This course may require outside observation hours at athletic events or practices.

This course satisfies the graduation requirement that a student must earn one (1) career cluster, workplace readiness, or language credit.

Sports Medicine I is recommended for students who are considering a career in the health or medicine. Students study anatomical and physiological systems of the human body and how they relate to physical activity. Special attention is given to the following topics: skeletal, muscular, respiratory, and nervous systems; the prevention, cause/effect, treatment, and reconditioning of athletic injuries; emergency care and first aid; and athletic training. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the curriculum.

90701 - Sports Medicine II

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Sports Medicine I

Fee: $25.00 per year

This course may require outside observation hours at athletic events or practices.

The student is encouraged to acquire CPR and First Aid certification.

This course satisfies the graduation requirement that a student must earn one (1) career cluster, workplace readiness, or language credit.

Sports Medicine II builds on Sports Medicine I and is recommended for students who are seriously considering a health- or medical- related career. The student acquires knowledge about sport-related injury recognition and prevention; emergency care and first aid; and rehabilitation. Special emphasis is placed on musculoskeletal, cardio respiratory, and neuromuscular body systems as well as evaluation techniques and disposition of athletic injuries. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the curriculum.

90702 - Sports Medicine III

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Sports Medicine II

Fee: $25.00 per year

This course requires outside observation hours at athletic events or practices.

The student is encouraged to acquire CPR and First Aid certification.

This course satisfies the graduation requirement that a student must earn one (1) career cluster, workplace readiness, or language credit.

Sports Medicine III is recommended for the student with the intention of pursuing a medical-related field. The student continues study of the recognition and prevention of sports related injuries; injury evaluation; first aid and emergency care; and rehabilitation. Other topics of special emphasis include but are not limited to: body systems, exercise physiology, kinesiology and conditioning, and epidemiology. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the curriculum.
