Art I is an entry level course recommended as a prerequisite for all art or craft courses. The course focuses on visual design fundamentals and exposes the student to a variety of methods, techniques and media. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

Drawing and Painting I is a studio course that requires the student to enter with an understanding of basic design and visual art fundamentals taught in Art I. The student works with various drawing and painting media (e.g., pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, conte crayon, gouache, oil painting, water color, acrylic, pastels, dyes, inks). He or she studies the making of art and directs awareness and growth through art history, aesthetics, and art criticism. The student prepares work for the market and uses this venue to pursue career possibilities.

Grades 11 & 12

Fee: $25.00 per semester

 

Students review painting and drawing techniques learned in Drawing and Painting I. The student reviews painting and

drawing techniques through a variety of media. He/She has the opportunity to focus on projects of choice while developing more in-depth painting and drawing skills. Students also pursue career possibilities and explore art history. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the curriculum.

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Drawing and Painting II

This course is a continuation of Drawing and Painting II. The student continues to explore a variety of media and techniques and gain experience with mixed media while developing an individual style of image making. There is the opportunity for students to focus on individual projects of choice. They visit art galleries and museums to gain an understanding of contemporary art and the role of the artist in society, pursue career possibilities, and explore art history. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the curriculum. 

Ceramics

Fee: $25.00 per semester.

 

Ceramics I is a beginning course in ceramic design which includes wheel throwing, hand building, glazing and the firing of sculptural and functional objects made of clay. The student examines and develops skills and proficiency in basic ceramic processes. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

Students demonstrate growing proficiency in the acquired skills taught in Ceramics I. The student individually demonstrates problem solving and decision-making abilities when applying the principles of visual design. Emphasis is on underlying concepts and ideas represented in the student’s work resulting from informed choices and personal aesthetics. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

In Ceramics IV the student develops, clarifies, and applies his or her philosophy of ceramics. The student continues with independent work and advanced explorations with techniques, processes, and aesthetics. The student develops and refines a portfolio evidencing high quality work, a broad base of knowledge, and in-depth understanding of personal ceramic forms. Literacy strategies are integrated throughout the curriculum.

Jewelry

70530 Jewelry I

Grades 9 - 12

Fee: $25.00 per semester. The use of special materials for specific projects may require an additional fee.

 

Jewelry I introduces students to the basics of the jewelry medium. Emphasis is placed on the students’ skills, craftsmanship, and originality. The techniques of soldering, faceting, cabochon, casting, and finishing are taught. The student works with a variety of materials that can be used to create jewelry. He or she examines career possibilities and learns to prepare work for market. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

Photography

The student may be asked to provide photographic paper, film, notebooks, and a camera.

 

Photography I develops aesthetic awareness and introduces students to technical concepts of black and white photography. Students learn to develop, print, enlarge, and compose photographs. Darkroom safety procedures, and proper care of photographic equipment will be addressed. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

The course utilizes a 35 mm camera, SLR and there is some use of a digital camera.

The student may be asked to provide photographic paper, film, notebooks, and a camera.

 

Students continue their study of Photography I with emphasis on excellence, both technically and aesthetically. They explore new techniques (including digital) and experiment with various kinds of photographic paper. Students learn to prepare photographs for exhibits, the market, and jobs related to the field of photography. The course utilizes a 35 mm camera, and there is some use of a digital camera. Current trends and practices may vary among APS school sites. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

Current trends and practices may vary among APS school sites.

Sculpture I is a beginning course which introduces various sculpture techniques which include modeling, caring, construction and assemblage, and installation. The student develops an understanding of the principles of three-dimensional design, including proportions of the human figure. The student reviews examples of artwork from sculptors. He/She translates design principles to three dimensions, learning additive and subtractive sculpture techniques through work in a variety of media. Drama I is a full-year, performance-based course that serves as an introduction to theater arts. The student studies basic principles and techniques in acting, theater history, musical theater, staging, voice and diction, pantomime, improvisation, choral reading, readers’ theater, storytelling, and oral interpretation. The student is also introduced to stage makeup, stage lighting, and technical production techniques. The student will study the relationship of drama to literature and other art forms. He or she receives an overview of careers in theater and related fields. The student participates in regularly scheduled performances during and outside the school day wearing appropriate performance attire. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Drama I with a ‘C’ or better and audition

The student is required to participate in regularly scheduled performances and rehearsals during and outside the school day.

 

Drama II is a full-year, performance-based course that provides acting experience at an intermediate level and an introduction to directing. The course refines and expands on acting skills studied in Drama I and introduces basic directing skills. There is emphasis on potential career development in theatre and related professions. The student continues to study principles and techniques of acting, musical theater, staging, voice and diction, pantomime, improvisation, and oral interpretation. He/she continues to explore stage makeup, stage lighting, and technical production techniques. The student participates and takes a more active role in regularly scheduled performances during and outside the school day wearing appropriate performance attire. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

The student enhances acting skills by developing, communicating, and sustaining characters in improvisations and informal or formal productions. There is emphasis placed on potential careers in theatre-related professions. The student participates and is expected to take a more active role in regularly scheduled performances during and outside of the school day wearing appropriate performance attire. The student is required to participate in regularly scheduled performances and rehearsals during and outside the school day.

 

Theater Production I is a full-year, performance-based course involving advanced acting, playwriting, directing, and aspects of technical theatre. The student studies and evaluates dramatic literature through critique and observation. He/ she acquires knowledge and skills for stage management and is introduced to theatre business fundamentals, including law and management. The student participates in regularly scheduled performances, rehearsals, and work calls during and outside of the school day wearing appropriate performance attire. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

 

75026 - Advanced Theatre Production

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Theatre Production with a ‘C’ or better and teacher approval

Grade 12

The student is required to participate in regularly scheduled performances and rehearsals during and outside the school day.

 

Advanced Theater Production is a full-year, performance-based course that builds on the knowledge and skills introduced in Theatre Production concerning acting, playwriting, directing, and aspects of technical theatre. The student participates in regularly scheduled performances, rehearsals, and work calls during and outside of the school day wearing appropriate performance attire. Literacy is integrated throughout the course. 

Band

7303F, 7303G, 7303H, 7303J - Marching Band I - IV

Grades 9 -12

Prerequisite: Audition, successful completion of previous level, and concurrent enrollment in Symphonic Band.

 Semester long course; .5 credit

Fees: Up to, but not to exceed $200.00 per year for materials, supplies, out of town travel, instrument maintenance, uniform costs and some out-of-school activities.

 

Each course is a zero-hour course and is taught before the regular school day. Out of school rehearsals and performances are part of the instructional program. The student is required to attend all rehearsals and performances and to attend band camp during the summer months. Two years of marching band may meet the PE graduation requirement for students in the Class of 2021 and beyond.

 

Marching Band I-IV courses are designed to for students to learn, develop, refine, and perform marching band techniques with appropriate music. Students at all levels will develop musical and technical skills necessary to perform music with correct style and accuracy, apply individual discipline in a performance setting, and demonstrate group cooperation. Students must memorize music and marching formations as required in various settings.

 

The student provides instruments and accessories although some school instruments may be available for student use. The student practices regularly at home and participates in regularly scheduled performances during and outside the school day, wearing appropriate performance attire. Music literacy is integrated throughout the course.

 

This course (along with Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble) form the Wind Symphony which is the varsity-level band at Sandia High School. The curricula for the classes are intertwined, hence the concurrent enrollment requirement. However, IB students or other 11th and 12th grade students with valid and severe schedule restrictions may participate in band (at a reduced capacity) by enrolling for and attending the zero-hour portions only.

 

92211, 92212, 92213, 92214 - Marching Auxiliary I - IV

Grades 9-12

Prerequisite: Audition and successful completion of previous level

Semester-long course; .5 credit (This class is only offered in the Spring. Students who are part of the marching auxiliary in the Fall Semester will enroll in the appropriate level of Marching Band.)

Fee: Up to, but not to exceed $50.00 per semester for materials, tools and maintenance of equipment. Some entry fees, out of town travel, and costume expenses may be borne by the student.

 

Each course is a zero-hour course and is taught before the regular school day. Out of school rehearsals and performances are part of the instructional program. The student is required to attend all rehearsals and performances and to attend band camp during the summer months.

 

Marching Auxiliary I-IV is a series of performance courses that are a direct extension of the band program and are only open to members of the Marching Band Auxiliary Unit (Flag, Rifle, or Saber). The student participates in a systematic, sequential learning experience about equipment work (Flag, Ribbon, Saber, etc.) and Ballet, Modern Dance, and Jazz Dance movement, gaining increasing competence each year. He or she engages in activities that utilize a wide variety of materials and experiences to develop techniques of the Color Guard genre, including instruction in performance repertoire skills. The student participates in the Marching Band during first semester and in Winter Guard during second semester.

Grades 9-12

Prerequisite: Audition, successful completion of previous level, and concurrent enrollment in Symphonic Band.

Fee: Up to, but not to exceed $200.00 per year for materials, supplies, out of town travel, instrument maintenance, uniform costs and some out-of-school activities.

 

The student participates in regularly scheduled performances during and outside the school day, a Zero-hour class, and in fundraising activities.

 

Wind Ensemble I-IV is a series of advanced performance courses for students with experience on standard woodwind, brass or percussion instruments. Students learn, develop, practice and perform advanced techniques of tone production, articulation, intonation, instrument care and maintenance, general musicianship, and musical literacy. The student performs within the traditions and standards of a Wind Ensemble using music appropriate for the

course level.

 

The student provides instruments and accessories although some school instruments may be available for student use. The student practices regularly at home and participates in regularly scheduled performances during and outside the school day, wearing appropriate performance attire. Music literacy is integrated throughout the course.

Symphonic band teaches intermediate techniques of tone production, articulation, intonation, instrument care and maintenance, general musicianship, and musical literacy. The student performs within the traditions and standards of a Wind Band using graded music appropriate for the level of the class while progressing toward more advanced music literature performed at subsequent course levels. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

Steel Ensemble I-IV is a series of performance courses providing the student with experience in, and knowledge of, steel band styles performed using steel pans (also known as “steel drums”) and rhythm section instruments. In Steel Ensemble courses students learn, practice, develop, and apply the basic techniques of technique, articulation, instrument care and maintenance, general musicianship, and musical literacy in the steel band style. The student performs within the traditions and standards of a Steel Ensemble using graded music appropriate for the level of the class while progressing toward more advanced music literature performed at subsequent course levels. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

Mixed Chorus is a beginning chorus course for first time high school singers. The course concentrates on learning good vocal techniques, improving sight-reading, and developing the ability to sing musically, while exposing the students to a wide variety of music literature and styles. This course is open to males and females. No audition is required for membership.

This is a stand-alone course that concentrates on learning proper vocal techniques, improving sight-reading, developing an ability to sing musically, and exposing students to a wide variety of treble music literature styles. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

The student enrolled in Concert Choir develops musicianship and specific performance skills through ensemble and solo singing. This course is offered to any male or female desiring the opportunity to sing in an advanced choir and requires instructor approval and audition. The student/singer experiences activities designed in diverse styles of choral literature, the student receives instruction that enables him/her to connect, examine, imagine, define, try, extend, refine, and integrate music study into other subject areas. Literacy is integrated throughout the course. Concert Choir I provides instruction in fundamental vocal development, performing, conducting, listening and analyzing music, in addition to focusing on the specific text being sung. The student develops the ability to understand and convey the composer’s intent to the audience. He/She is encouraged to take private voice lessons to facilitate his/her vocal improvement. The student performs publicly as a culmination of daily rehearsal and music goals and demonstrates mastery of basic choral technique.

Grades 9-12

Prerequisite: Audition or permission of instructor; concurrent enrollment in another choral ensemble (exception may be made for students enrolled in either advanced band or advanced orchestra)

Fee: Up to but not to exceed $100.00 per year for materials, accompanists, and costume expenses. Additionally, the student may be required to pay for entry fees, out of town travel, and some costume costs.

 

All students are required to attend all rehearsals and performances which support and extend classroom learning.

 

This is an advanced chorus performing a variety of choral styles and musical periods. This group is limited in size with an emphasis on entertainment: popular, jazz, rock, folk, and contemporary music.

Beginning Guitar

Prerequisite: None

Fee: Up to, but not to exceed, $50.00 per year for materials, clinicians, maintenance of equipment, and, possibly, entry fees for district festivals.

Students are required to attend all rehearsals and performances (which support and extend classroom learning), including those scheduled for afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

Beginning Guitar is a course that acquaints the student with the fundamentals of guitar-playing and basic music theory. Students learn technical skills (i.e., chord forms, scales) through playing a variety of music of different styles. Literacy is integrated throughout the course. The student at all levels has the opportunity to participate in school and community performances.

Course Description: AP Music Theory is a college music course introducing the first-year student to musicianship, theory, musical

materials, and procedures. This course incorporates a variety of titles: Basic Musicianship, Elementary Theory, Harmony and

Dictation, Structure of Music. AP Music Theory emphasizes many aspects of music, such as harmony and integrates aspects of

melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, form, musical analysis, elementary composition, and history and style. Musicianship skills such as

dictation and other listening skills, sight-singing, and keyboard harmony are considered an important part of the theory course. The

student’s ability to read and write musical notation is fundamental to this course. It is recommended that the student have acquired at

least basic performance skills in voice or on an instrument for two years prior to taking this course. The goal of an AP Music Theory

course is to develop a student’s ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard

or presented in a score. Students can take the College Board AP Music Theory Exam at the end of the course. Literacy is integrated

throughout the course.

school and community performances. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

Orchestra

Orchestra (Preparatory Orchestra) is a performance course for the student with experience on the violin, viola, cello or string bass. Orchestra teaches the more advanced techniques of tone production, articulation, intonation, instrument care and maintenance, general musicianship, and musical literacy. The student is introduced to and performs within the traditions and standards of an orchestra using graded music II through III+. The student performs, with expression and technical accuracy, a varied repertoire of developmentally appropriate orchestral literature. The student provides instruments and accessories although some school instruments may be available for student use. The student practices regularly at home. He/She participates in regularly scheduled performances during and outside of the school day in appropriate performance attire. Literacy is integrated throughout the course.

The student is introduced to and performs within the traditions and standards of an orchestra using graded music III through V. The student performs, with expression and technical accuracy, a varied repertoire of developmentally appropriate orchestral literature. The student provides instruments and accessories although some school instruments may be available for student use. The student practices regularly at home.
