The APS Peer Helper Program is an extra-curricular team that focuses on youth suicide prevention, positive youth development, peer helping skills and team building. The program is managed by the APS Student, Family & Community Supports division and is funded by the Bernalillo County Behavioral Health Initiative.
Peer Helpers are Ravens that are:
Honest & trustworthy
Kind & caring
Accepting of others
Comfortable talking to others
Able to work well with others
Peer Helpers help fellow Ravens in need! They have been trained to be good listeners and helpers. If you have a problem and don’t know who to talk to, Peer Helpers can help you figure out where to go and who to talk to for help.
Peer Helpers also help the RGHS community through monthly projects and semester service-learning projects that teach Ravens about self-care, positive coping mechanisms, mental health, suicide prevention and more.
Many students talk to their friends and peers about their problems first, before going to an adult. Other students won’t reach out to an adult at all or try to figure out their problems on their own. Peer Helpers are students who are trained to be good listeners and help others figure out where to go and who to talk to for help. They help students who otherwise might not reach out for help.
