The Six R's

Relationships

The foundation of restorative practices is relationships. Developing and maintaining positive relationships between staff, students, and families is essential for creating a safe and welcoming community. Garfield staff is committed to helping students feel connected to their peers and the community.

Respect

A mutual respect is expected between all staff, students, and families at Garfield. Respect is assumed, meaning it is given as a way to show we value one another, no matter our background or differences.  We respect one another for who we are.

Responsibility

When we make mistakes or cause harm towards someone in our community, we are accountable for our actions. Whether it is intentional or not, we recognize when we have harmed others by asking the questions like "How did my actions affect others?" Taking responsibility for our actions is the first step Garfield students and staff take in making things right.

Repair

Once everyone involved in a harmful situation takes responsibility for their part in it, we can begin to repair the relationships that were broken. We ask questions like, "What do you (the harmed) need to feel better about this situation?" or "What do we (those who caused harm) need to do to make things right?" Repair can come in many forms, so consequences may look different than what many of us are used to. With restorative practices, those who were harmed are a part in determining what is needed for repair.

Reintegration

Reintegration is very important to the healing process. The reality is sometimes students are removed from a class or school community for a period of time.  At Garfield, we will work to welcome students back into the learning community in a positive and supportive way. Garfield students will know that they have been missed and that we care about their well-being and success.

Radical Love

Restorative practices is a mindset, not a program. And it is hard work. We do this work out of radical love for our students and community.  Radical love means we offer support, kindness, and consideration to our students and families without expecting anything in return.
