Specialists speak the languages of the local refugee community and provide in-classroom support to newcomer students who speak rare languages such as Arabic, Dari/Farsi, Pashto, Kinyarwanda, Swahili, and regional dialects. Specialists work alongside content area teachers (not ELD classes). They do this by utilizing their language skills to explain complicated concepts and provide academic and social support to newcomers. Specialists also support family engagement at various schools with high populations of newcomers.
