This year I will be incorporating the strategies and components of Total Writing Revolution (TWR),
a research-based approach for teaching the fundamentals of writing, with two curricula: Magentic Reading & Picturing Writing.
Based on the Hochman method, offers a clear, coherent method of instruction for any subject or grade level that turns struggling writers into strong communicators, deepens their understanding of content, and develops their analytical abilities. The Writing Revolution’s method enables educators to teach writing skills and content simultaneously. There’s no separate writing class and no separate writing curriculum. Instead, teachers of all subjects adapt the strategies and activities to preexisting curriculum and weave them into their content instruction.
I have attended a one month summer seminar and day-long introductory course. I will also be attending half day trainings once a month from August to December. APS will be providing a mentor to assist in my implementation of the TWR strategies. I will also be working with a group of teachers from around the district and three teachers from my school site to begin the Total Writing Revolution!
TWR will be incorporated into the two existing curricula I currently use: Magnetic Reading for language arts and Picturing Writing for writing. More information about TWR can be found HERE.
In this unit we will introduce the Artist Workshop & review the Writing Process (Brainstorming, Drafting, Editing, Publishing). Students will learn the crayon resist art process and how to read pictures to access detail and description. This unit introduces several simple art techniques that help students expand their repertoire of visual effects. This unit will also introduce the use of descriptive language, including expanding sentences, adding details, using metaphors, and using anthropomorphic language. Students learn how to establish a strong sense of setting and mood through both image and text. This unit also incorporates weather science.
More information about the Picturing Writing program is available here: https://picturingwriting.org/picturing-writing/
Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art® is a multimodal, evidence-based approach to literacy learning that uses simple crayon resist art techniques and the study of quality picture books to teach the art of writing. Treating words and pictures as equal languages for developing and recording ideas, Picturing Writing has been proven effective for a wide range of learners, including Title I students, Special Education students, and English Learners. Research has also documented significant gains in writing for boys, who tend to lag behind girls in writing scores across the nation. Picturing Writing uses specially designed brainstorming sheets to help students access rich descriptive language through reading their pictures. This engaging, language-rich approach to teaching writing is aligned with English Language Arts Standards and can be used to teach a variety of genres, including descriptive writing, poetry, narrative, research-based poetry, research-based narrative, informational text, and opinion pieces. Picturing Writing can be easily integrated across the science and social studies curriculum and is aligned with S.E.L. Competencies.
Magnetic Reading is the district-supported, common core standards aligned curriculum for language arts. This curriculum is focused on reading comrpehension strategies and is used in my special education classroom for exposure to grade level standards. We will be alternating between fiction and nonfiction units to learn how to read, comprehend, question, answer, and summarize texts from various cultures and disciplines.
We will be learning how to respond to reading by writing to answer comprehension questions, retell and summarize stories and information, and build content knowledge to inform our other writing and research projects. For more information on what unit and lesson we are learning about currently, visit our "Language Arts" page under the curriculum heading on this website or visit the Magnetic Reading website at HERE, the iReady website HERE and the Family Center HERE.
