Science Course Outline/Syllabus

School has it's own language it seems. Here are some helpful words.

• SAT - Student Assistance Team designed to help struggling students to see if they need different types of instruction. Ultimately a student may need an IEP.

• IEP - Individualized Education Plan is a legal document created by experts in the field designed to identify areas of need and a plan for a student.  It can include gifted students who need more challenges. It can also include students with a specific learning disability who just need an extra support or two to be successful. 

• Jamboard - an interactive white board where students can post pictures, text, sticky notes, and draw.

• Kahoot!, Blooket, Quizlet - online quiz games similar to Jeopardy but with a twist.

Students can get to Google Classroom in a couple different ways. 

• Go to my.aps.edu and log in using APS id and password. Then select the "Google Classroom" icon.

• Go to google.com, click the "waffle" (button near the upper right that looks like a bunch of boxes) and select "Google Classroom." Students must be logged into their APS account on google.

Google Classroom basics:

• Stream - news, chats, and other information.

• Banner - top picture of the Stream page. Teachers add information like class times, meet codes, etc.  For Ms. Burwinkle's math class, the Google Meet code is towards the left middle of the banner.  The Office Hours meet code is HMSburwinkle. The office hour code does NOT work for regular class times.

• Classwork - contains important topics, assignments, etc. The top of the page has links to important FYI. Students can scroll down to find videos of google meets they missed or need to watch again. They will also find assignments listed by week.

• Turning in work - when a student finishes his/her work, he/she needs to "submit" the form for it to be seen by the teacher.  Pressing "Turn In" does not guarantee that the teacher gets it.  If your child does the work, please remind them to click "submit."

• Grades - Grades will be posted on StudentVue and ParentVue. The grade on Google Classroom does not include all the parts to a student's grade.

Grades this year are a bit different.  Instead of giving every assignment a grade: A-F, we are focusing on how students master the standards, so some assignments might have an alternate score.  As we grade assignments or tests, students could receive a 0-4 rating based on how they demonstrated their knowledge of the standard (science topic).  Here are the basics (subject to change as the science department fine tunes the grading system).  

4 (Master 90%-100%) = student shows correct work and answer with little to no errors. Their explanations go above and beyond. They demonstrate they can apply and expand their knowledge.  This is typically equal to an "A."

3 (Proficient 80%-89%) = student shows correct work and answer with minor errors. If explanations are required, they show a basic explanation. They show they know what they are doing. This is typically equal to a "B."

2 (Progressing 70%-79%) = student shows correct work but incorrect answer or their thinking was on the right track, but they are missing a few key points. Sometimes this is also equal to a correct answer with no explanation when explanation of showing thinking was required.  This is typically equal to a "C."

1 (Emerging 60%-69%) = some attempt was made or the answer and work were incorrect.  This is typically equal to a "D."

0 (Failed attempt 0%-59%) = no attempt was made. This is equal to an "F."
