French II

French II is a continuation of French I. This second-year French class continues to emphasize communication by adding more key structures and expanding the topics students can communicate about. The majority of class time is spent in French. We continue to create and read stories about things that are interesting and important to us, play games and do activities and projects that help us interact with the stories and structures we are working to acquire. French and francophone culture continues to be an important focus in French II. We continue to expand our knowledge of the history, traditions, and cultures of France as well as several francophone countries and compare them to our own histories and cultures.

As students acquire language, they become more proficient. They are able to accomplish more and more tasks, communication about more topics and make themselvees better understood. At the end of French II, students typically achieve a novice-high to intermediate-low level on the ACTFL proficiency scale.

ACTFL PROFICIENCY LEVELS

Novice High (NH): Students at this level can handle a slightly wider range of topics and situations. They can express themselves with slightly more complexity and use simple sentences to narrate and describe in present, past, and future tenses. Their vocabulary and sentence structures show a bit more variety

Intermediate Low (IL): Students at this level can communicate with more detail and fluency. They can handle a range of tasks and social situations related to personal and everyday topics. They can provide information about themselves, their immediate environment, and their daily activities. While their language usage might still be somewhat formulaic, they are able to handle more spontaneous interactions.
