Language Arts
Our next ELA (English Language Arts) unit will focus on Word Choice and Structure. The students will read and analyze various pieces of literature and nonfiction writing to analyze how visual and multimedia (pictures, etc.) can contribute to the meaning of the text. The students will analyze figurative language and how it enhances literature. They are responding to the text in a variety of ways including using graphic organizers to compare and contrast characters and other aspects of the literature and exploring domain specific vocabulary. We will be reading traditional tales and folktales to expand our understanding of character traits. We have also begun novel studies to practice working on longer text and analyzing plot.
Math Concepts
Our current math unit is focused on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. We will be comparing fractions to whole numbers and identifying proper and improper fractions. We will "rename" or find common denominators when making those comparisons. We will continue to work on mulitplication and division to strengthen our skills.
Science
Our science unit is focused on sound and the way that we can communicate through signals. We will also be exploring sound waves and vibrations and how they look using a physical model (yarn).
Social Studies
In social studies, we will be exploring concepts in economics. The project that we will be working on will lean into the "Shark Tank" concept of inventing a product and the need for it in the current economy. The students will evaluate the cost to make the product and if manufacturing can be considered as an option. Material costs and marketing will also be considered in the project development phase.
