Trade War with China

By: Ava Stratton

“It hasn’t had a major impact yet, but it will” says former UCLA graduate Ben Dickerson referring to the trade war with China. He explains that the trade war has many aspects to it and is very complicated, causing it to have an impact on the economy. As these effects begin to appear, Dickerson explains that the trade war with China might have a negative impact on the economy, causing it to hurt both Chinese and American workers.

According to the New York Times, the trade war with China officially started in 2018 when President Trump began to put tariffs on Chinese goods. While by then, he had already put tariffs on thirty-four billion dollars of Chinese goods and threatened to impose taxes on sixteen more billion dollars on other goods. The New York Times states that “on Thursday, President Trump showed no signs of backing down from his fight,” which eventually led to President Xi Jinping to do the same. As Presidents Trump and Jinping continue to impose taxes on opposing country goods, the taxes are beginning to impact other happenings within the U.S. and China, such as (according to Ben Dickerson) the government subsidizing farmers.

According to CNBC,the trade war with China won’t only impact farmers, it will impact all citizens, as Chinese exporters aren’t reducing their prices. Dickerson explains that one of the reasons “you put taxes on foreign trade is to keep American products affordable. It is important to have trade with countries that will make goods cheaper.” Unfortunately, according to CNBC, this goal of a trade war is not playing out well, as “the U.S. economy is being hit harder than the Chinese economy.”

The Balance clearly explains what a trade war is, the attempt to reduce international trade using tariffs and imports. The Balance reassures the idea that these attempts have not impacted the U.S. economy in a positive way. It concludes how “In 2017, those states [Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin] produced half of all U.S. food. Nationally, farmers’ income fell by $11.8 billion between January and March 2019. That’s the most since 2016.” This shows how so far, the trade war with China has been unsuccessful for the U.S.

Dickerson explains how while a trade war generally supports a more nationalistic point of view, a trade war can potentially present progress throughout all political parties to help a country develop relationships. Dickerson explains that in his opinion, “with Trump, the war might just end up hurting Chinese and American workers.” Still, the trade war is not complete and Presidents Trump and Jinping continue to impose tariffs in hope of some sort of agreement. Meanwhile, the impacts on all American citizens might begin to appear in more obvious circumstances.

2020 Presidential Candidates

written by:Jonah Maestas

Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are two of the most well known Democrat and Republican candidates and both are running for the 2020 Presidential election. It is important to learn about our potential new leaders in this time of crisis because ultimately, they will effect the future of our nation.

The public has a right to know how these leaders rules and policies are going to effect them. Immigration has always been an issue regarding politics. Voters need to know how these parties are going to address illegal immigrants, passports, and other issues of immigration. Another topic that needs to be addressed is how we are going to deal with gun control, violence and shootings. This topic is often avoided but it is important that we put an end to mass shootings and other forms of gun violence. The voters have to see all the information of the candidates so that they can make a decision.

Donald Trump, a Republican candidate, was born on June 14,1946 and is the current President of the United States. Donald Trump is arguably one of the most controversial Presidents in the history of elections in the US. This is due to the public questioning him because of his erratic behavior and personality. He is also one of the first President to be a celebrity and TV personality before being elected. He is often depicted as an unfit leader for the US because of his vulgar and blunt personality to women, press, the public, and other powerful leaders.

Bernie Sanders, a Democrat candidate, was born on September 8, 1941 and is currently running in the 2020 election. Bernie Sanders previously ran for the 2016 election but was unsuccessful. Bernie is well known for his opposition to economic equality. He is also known for his position on tuition free education. Unlike Trump, Bernie has no serious controversial accusations and is generally kind, generous and passionate for his cause.

Donald Trump's Impeachment

Written by: Ashley Nevarez-Casas

Donald Trump is the 45th and current president of the United States. Before entering politics, he was a businessman and television personality. Trump was born and raised in the New York City borough of Queens. As per Donald Trump biography he received a bachelor's degree in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

What is impeachment? As per The U.S.Constitution, Article II, section 4- “The President, Vice President and all Civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” The Constitution gives the House of Representatives the only power to impeach an official, and it makes the Senate the sole court for impeachment trials. The power of impeachment is limited to removal from office but also provides an officer to be eliminated from holding future office. Fines and potential jail time for crimes committed while in office are left to civil courts. Where does Impeachment come from? Impeachment came from the British constitutional history.

Lawyers for the House of Representatives on Wednesday accused President Donald Trump of trying to “obstruct his own impeachment” as per TPM. The authority to block his advisers from cooperating with congressional investigations. The allegation came in a stinging 66 page court filing as part of the House Judiciary Committee’s bid to secure testimony from White House Counsel Don McGahn, who Democrats consider to be the primary witness in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Saúl Jiménez (37), a newly residente says “Viví mucho tiempo con el temor de que algun dia me separaran de mi familia por que no tenia papeles’’(I lived a long time with the fear that one day they would separate me from my family because I had no papers). He also said “Recuerdo que mi angustia creció más cuando el presidente Trump entró” (remember that my anguish grew more when President Trump entered). By then Sir. Jimenez had his papers, but was still worried because he had just recently fixed papers by when president Donald Trump came into office. Many immigrants and new residents live with this fear like Sir. Jimenez, because Trump has caused for many to live with fear and be afraid to even come out their households or even come out to see the sunlight.
